Re: Heinkel HD38 Photo?

According to Volker Koos there were 16 HD 38 built

One HD 38a WNr 320
Seven HD 38b WNr 366-369, 384, 63-64
Eight HD 38c WNr 385-390, 79, 81

Out of these, one WNr stands out, 385, since it seems to have no history at all
No D-digit reg is known and Volker has nothing on it at all

I checked Barry Rosch's list, and some others as well - nothing!

Cheers
Stig

Re: Heinkel HD38 Photo?

I have the same information listed but for W/Nr.385 I have this listed as belonging with Kusten-Jagdstaffel 2/136 - 05.35 at Holtenau as also the following W/Nr.s
387 - 389 - 390
363 - 364 - 370 - (Strangely the last 3 W/Nrs were listed with the pre-fix 3 instead of the Arado 63; 64; 70) However, I am not certain of the source. Can anyone assist?

Re: Heinkel HD38 Photo?

Very interesting details Tom, thanks

I am a bit puzzled about your listing of WNr (3)70 since I cannot see how this could be a HD 38

Cheers

Re: Heinkel HD38 Photo?

The listing of Kusten-Jagdstaffel 2/136 W/Nrs I think must have come from a Unit Strength listing or some other document (my guess? Had these in my data-base for ages)
With this Unit I also have listed W/Nrs 368 & 369 (Sorry forgot to add)
The W/Nrs all refer to Type HD38. If these did come from a document then perhaps the 363 - 364 & 370 were listed as mistakes possibly because the person typing the lists followed the lines of the other W/Ns in the list by adding the 3 in order to match the others!! (I can only guess because I have in my data-base a note saying that the W/Nr is listed as such)

Re: Heinkel HD38 Photo?

Thanks for the additional details Tom

At the moment I will treat WNr 370 as a misprint for WNr (3)79.
Sloppy hand writing will no doubt keep us busy until we pass away....

Re: Heinkel HD38 Photo?

I have my infiormation about the 12 He 38 aircraft taken over by the Luftwaffe up to 30 September 1934 from the document B/A M/A RL3/1932: Stand der Übernahme von neuen Flugzeugen durch LA V am 30.9.1934 (Anlage zu LA V Nr. 7080/34 v. 6.11.34.)
H 38 zu liefernde Gesamt Anzahl: 12
Von der Gesamtanzahl waren zu liefern bis 30.9. : 12
Werknummern der bis 30.9. übergebenen Flugzeuge: F63, F.64, 368, 369, F.79, F.81, 385, 386, 387, 388, 389, 390.

We know that the prototype HD/He 38 W.Nr. 320 is not included, which was normal for prototypes. However, the three other Werk-Nummers mentioned by Volker Koos, 366, 367 and 384, I have no knowledge of these to be HD/He 38 aircraft. In any case, they seem not to have been formally taken over by the Luftwaffe.

Re: Heinkel HD38 Photo?

Hi Björn

Well if you have access to the old German civil register (D-digits), you will find
WNr 366 registered as D-2061 in May 1931. Karl Ries lists it as DBF in Aug 1931
WNr 367 crashed before it was registered 29 Jan 1931 killing its testpilot
WNr 368 thus became D-2062 in October 1931

All very good reasons why neither 366 and 367 never went to the Luftwaffe.

WNr 384 was registered D-2013 in October 1931 and again Ries reports it was destroyed in April 1932.
Again a good reason it was not on your list in 1934

Cheers
Stig

Re: Heinkel HD38 Photo?

Stig

Reis copied all his data directly from the NfL , monthly "Noice to Airmen", He made many mistakes in copying, in one instance he missed out 1 a/c and consequently got more wrong

c/n 366 was D-2061 not 2066
D-2066 was a M 23

In Feb 1928 the NfL published a current civil Register, early in 1934 all c/n were omitted

Regards

Tony
