Action of the south of Italy.

On 25.7.43 @ 12.15hr two Luftwaffe transport aircraft (gigants ?) were attacked and shotdown off the southeast coast of Italy, one crashed into the sea east of Caprera, and the other made an emergency landing and burnt out at Maddalena, a number of crew and passengers were lost from both aircraft, the action took place 10mls east of Capo Ferro.I would like to know which allied units were involved, thank you. peter.r

Re: Action of the south of Italy.

144 Sqn (Beaufighters) claimed a Me 323 at 1210 at SZXB 1035, Sardinia area (Sgt Murray/F/Sgt Rice + Sgt Fletcher/FSgt Orme). At 1215 at SZXB 1025, Sardinia, inland a second Me 323 was claimed (FSgt Hamar/Sgt Richards + P/O King/FSgt Tinham). These claims are on July 26, 1943 according to the 144 Sqn ORB.

Enjoy!

Frank.

Re: Action of the south of Italy.

Hello,

the Beaufighter TF.X LX784 of 144 Squadron was probably shot down by a Re.2001 of 160° Gruppo. Capt. Valtacoli claimed a twin-engined aircraft 30 Km. off Tavolara.
