Questions about the Bf 109 E gun sight
Hi,
I have some questions concerning these 2 enlarged parts of 2 photos. I was helped via long time ago by famous Lemb (http://www.luftwaffe-experten.org/forums/) but unfortunately I lost information included in responses. It seems these shots are showing part of a same Bf109 E-7 (?) : Photo A (and B) : 1) Part 1 is the : armored cockpit. Where or/and when did this part was added : in factory or on general maintenance units or directly on the field units by mechanics ? Photo B : 2) Part 2 : seems to be a tool (?) : if so a screwdriver ? 3) Part 3 : removable viewfinder (a word for camera probably not for weapon … sorry). 4) Did wartime reports show this system ? 5) It seems these photos are showing an a/c belonging to a training unit : So what are the exact German words wich could appear in Flugbuchen speaking about : strafings/ground attack pratices ? or so ... Thank you for all your contribution ! Philippe Last edited by canonne; 1st April 2020 at 14:17. |

Re: Questions about the Bf 109 E gun sight
Well...#1...that armour glass was installed in-factory. It installed with 4 bolts (one in each corner). They moved the glass to inside the cockpit for the G model onward.
I have absolutely no idea what I am looking at in the 2nd pic. none of those items have to do with the gunsight or glass. The only thing under that rectangular cut-out in the glass frame is vent that allowed the pilot to cool the cockpit. He could open or close manually. The tools are far to low to be for a sight (?) |

#3 maybe starter handle ? It wouldn't be an unreasonable place to put it, conveniently to hand when required to start the engine.

Harrisson, Piero, Ouidjat ! Thank you so much ! N° 3 :so it was a starter handle ?! Never thought about that . But now as you are stating that. Really I never saw such situation.
But please do you have any photo a a starter handle I could compare. Mines are too small, far to have a distinct view. But for item N° 2 ??? Merci !!! It seems clear now. Philippe |

Re: Questions about the Bf 109 E gun sight
Not sure what #2 is...but it cannot be part of the handle...unless the angle of the photo is giving some sort of optical illusion.
Seems to be something else Mike |

Re: Questions about the Bf 109 E gun sight
It is the starter crank, the part sticking out to the middle of the foto is the end that goes into the starter. That hand crank is not visible because it is angled down out of sight.

Re: Questions about the Bf 109 E gun sight
Friends, Thank you very much indeed for helping me to resolve that was for me a real mystery ! A crank starter ... Everyone play a decisive role giving his own piece for the solution. I proposed a tool for part n° 2 but that remains to be seen ...
Thank you so much. All the best. |
