Fw 190 of Graf

Hello unikum

To my unpracticed eye the subject of the photograph appears to be rather elusive Fw 190 A-4 (W.Nr. 0140 634) that he flew during his tenure as Kommandeur of EJGr Ost in early 1943. He also flew a much better photographically documented Fw 190 A-5 (W.Nr. 0152 594) during this time period as well. The best way to distinguish which of the two is shown would be by measuring the cowling bulges in relationship to the inboard cannon as the A-5 variant introduced a 150 millimeter insert behind the engine cowling. I was able to find this decal instruction sheet that includes some rather interesting information on the subtle differences between these two aircraft. I hope that this helps you arrive to some sort of conclusion as to which of these fighters is the subject of the photograph.

Horrido!

Leo

Re: FW 190A from H. Graf????JG 52

There are two 190s that have been documented for Graf while Kdr. of EJGr.Ost, a A-4 and a A-5. The A-5, WNr. 2594 has been published all over the place, the A-4, to my knowledge, has only appeared in 'Die Flugzeugfuhrer Ausbildung der Deutschen Luftwaffe 1935-1945', Vol. 1 or 2 by Sven Carlsen and Michael Meyer from VDM Heinz Nickel. The markings on the machines are very similar. (And I've never added the A-4 to my database - what a dunce.)
