Condor Legion emblems

Can anyone tell me when AS/88 started applying the death's head badge to its aircraft and in a similar vein, and during what period where the aircraft marked with serial numbers on the fuselage?

TIA

Adam

Re: Condor Legion emblems

I know only one photo from an He 59 with AS/88 showing the Code. All other know photos from He 59 are without them. The death's head emblem must be worn before the 21. Juni 1938. On this date the AS/88 flew the only Torpedomission during the Civil War against Blockadebrecher at the coast of Bareclona. There are at least an dozen photos showing the He 59 with that emblem and load with one Torpedo.(Bundesarchiv)

Re: Condor Legion emblems

Thanks Hanshauprich,

I have pictures of two different He 59 codes on the fuselage (522 and 526) - are either of these codes you have seen?

Also, do you have details of the the 21.06.38 mission?

TIA

Adam

Re: Condor Legion emblems

For the photos I need to take a look in my collection. I remember an Ju 52/3mSee from AS/88 with the number 577 on the Rumpf. The black disc for the National Airforce is in the same style as by the He 59.

On the 21. o6. 1938 AS/88 attacked Blockebrecher at the coastline near Valencia. They hit the britisch Merchant Vessel (Suppley Cargo for the Republikaner) Thorpeness 4.800t with one Torpedo. The Vessel sunk. Other Blockadebrecher where attacked with 250kg bombs and 20mm cannon fire.
In one case the He 59 attacked an little KÜMO in the same arera, the vessel was less then 450t. But it was an hard one!! AS/88 need more then two days, 15x250kg and 4x500kg bombs and over 150 round of 20mm to damage the small vessel. The Capitän set the vessel on the beach!!!!!!

Re: Condor Legion emblems

Spanish nationalist side aircraft has as register two groups of numbers: first the aircraft type (that could be share for some unusual types) and follows the number of the aircraft.

Ju-52 was 22 type, so a register or fuselage number could be 22*57 or so on, where * is the black roundel, but I don't know examples of three numbers marks, so I will be happy to see your image.

You can see images of Ju-52 at Spanish Civil War at
http://usuarios.lycos.es/mrvalverde/GC13501.HTM

---
Looking for He-59 images, I understand you reference to 577 marks was for this type of aircraft. I found a Image at:

http://usuarios.lycos.es/mrvalverde/HE23216.JPG

Wich shows an He-59 with *529 marks. Later, He-59 will be marked as 71-NN after a roundel, where NN was the aircraft number.

Re: Condor Legion emblems

Hi Adam
From "Aircraft of the Spanish Civil War" by Gerald Howson AS/88 were displaying a symbol by Feb1938 but the book mentions only an Ace of Spades on a Black Disc on either side of the nose and this is confirmed in a photo of an He59 although this also shows the white rudder with a black diagonal cross that was used by Franco's Air Force after WW2 and into the 60's at least
