A part to identify :
Dear all
I am asked to identify an aircraft part . it is obviously connected to some bomb carrying, but can somebody recognize it ? I don't have much information about the background (date ..) but that it was found in the French Alp mountains, not very far from Modane. Thanks a lot and enjoy the sun; Cheers GC Last edited by gilles collaveri; 15th June 2021 at 07:20. |

Re: A part to identify :
merci Clin,
I just noticed this stamp and the part number "147961" I could not connect the stamp to an aircraft type; There is also elsewhere "14752". Any clue ? GC Last edited by gilles collaveri; 16th November 2020 at 06:12. |

Re: A part to identify :
Gilles, the remains of a black camouflage leads us for a RAF machine used by night or an USAAF machine flown at night too. This is a certitude.
Checked the Short Stirling and Westland Lysander (SD 148 Sqdn) bomb rack photos and got no match though....so another kind of machine.... Maybe an old Whitley? Nice finding....surely the experts will help to match this one too... Adriano |

Re: A part to identify :
Merci René.
Adriano, this is a very good idea. I was told today that this part was found near Avrieux, this is West of Turin. I could imagine a British bomber coming back from a night mission to Turin crashing in the Alps; Whitley would make sense. Any bombing of Turin by Whitleys ?? Ciao my friend & stay safe. GC |

Re: A part to identify :
This link contains an interesting video (scroll down a little to find it) about bombing up a Wellington bomber.
At the 16:28 mark it shows a Small Bomb Container being loaded up. At about the 18:40 mark they roll the container over so you can see the top of the container. You can compare it to the posted photos. https://stephentaylorhistorian.com/2...uctional-film/ The same video is also here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHFBTWN6tDQ |

Re: A part to identify :
Hello Gilles
Modane was bombed heavily two times in 1943, Avrieux ist just next door. But a "return flight" from Torino is of course a good possibility. Here a drawing of the small version of the SBC (a bigger one was used on Lancasters). Have a nice day ! Jean Schreiber |

You are awesome, guys ;
Any British loss in the area of Modane that could match with this finding ? GC |
