601 Sqn's Airacoras serial numbers

Hello!

A friend of mine is looking for serial numbers of Bell P-39 Airacobra I used by 601 Squadron. I, and he, would be very grateful if you could write them here or, if such exists, write a link to appropriate site.

Thank you very much.

Best regards

Dominik

Re: 601 Sqdn Airacobra serial numbers

don't I wish there were a site, then I would also have the answers I seek.
from what little info I have is this :
AH 571 through AH 602 were used operationally by no. 601 Sqdn RAF.
ones that I can match serial with squadron code letter are :
AH 571 not coded but was the usual aircraft flown by sqdn leader E.J. Gracie.
AH 583 UF J
AH 585 UF O
AH 586 UF N
AH 589 UF L
AH 595 UF M
AH 601 also not coded and was used by E.J. Gracie for photographic purposes and was kept clean for this.
most profiles of the Airacobra Mk 1 are of this aircraft.
AH 602 UF W "Winston" this aircraft had Winston written in white on the left nose (gun bay) for a while ,but this was removed before the big photo-op where most of the photos of these aircraft come from.

one other plane was coded UF C but I don't have a serial number to go with it.

I can highly recommend
"Camouflage and Markings"
Mohawk,Tomahawk and Airacobra
by Ducimus publishing
it is a very good source for this information.

as soon as I re-locate my copy I can provide some more info such as pilots,as it list a few.

Re: 601 Sqn's Airacoras serial numbers

I can add the following:
AH578 UF-E
AH579 UF-J
AH580 UF-L
AH582 UF-N
AH593 UF-J

The first three came from "Aircraft Camouflage and Markings 1907-1954" and the last two from "Fighting Colors". HTH.

Re: 601 Sqn's Airacoras serial numbers

Gentlemen , I Thank You both.
I was thinking about that website but forgot the URL
as for the other serials I note there is duplication and error.
the list I have is from "Camouflage and Markings" and as best I can tell it is accurate .
the Flight Global website has very high quality photos and in most cases you can see the serial.
as far as I know there are no errors in the list from C&M as it seems based on those same photographs.
smaller and low-quality versions of the FG images also appear in C&M , and I believe the authors most likely viewed the negatives or high-quality prints to arrive at the serial numbers.

if your serials come from artwork profiles I wouldn't trust them too much.
