Oblt Adolf Dickfeld accident at Kairouan January 1943

Adolf Dickfeld's accident at Kairouan AF is noted in his book "Footsteps of the Hunter" as a traumatic experience. However, there is no mention of it in the MAW Volume 3. In the old "Fighters over Tunisia", the date is listed as January 8,1943. In the LW Officer Database, the date of the accident is noted as January 18. Which is correct?

Hi

Dickfeld was a devout Nazi until the day he died. I wouldn't believe too much of the content of his book.

Kind Regards

Johannes

Have you checked the General Quartiermeister loss / casualty reports (available online from the Bundesarchiv)?

Johannes, although the book is an easy read, I do not believe parts of the book because they seem like Walter Dahl's book, i.e. full of exaggerations and out right lies. For instance, he tells a story about a disabled Luftwaffe soldier who killed a P-47 pilot for machine gunning his family. In truth, it was a B-24 crewman who was killed by the officer. Still, as a semi-novelized account of Luftwaffe service, it was cheap enough.
The lack of documentation on the January crash in MAW3 surprised me as it was in the original "Fighters Over Tunisia". Maybe there is documentation on the crash? Is the crash mentioned in Mombeek's JG-2 book? I don't have the 1943 volumes, just 1944 & 1945

No evidence for Dickfeld's Nazism. But was told by a reliable person he returned home to Germany to die, and still loved his Führer(aged 99)

Generally Nazi's were not invited to Geschwader reunions, not that Dickfeld was in Germany to do so.

With Dahl his Leistungsbuch reveals so many previously unknown claims for him, but there sequence i.e just a few at a time is not the pattern of an "Over-claimer". He lists witnesses and seemed to change aircraft type and units so regular as General of Fighters, yet the Leistungsbuch is probably not fake as Dickfeld mentions his unlikely "Total" in his book from the mid 1960's, I suspect he just made most or all of it up on paper, so not "over-claiming" just pure lies. Unless we can dig-up some reliable paper evidence to prove otherwise.

Kind Regards

Johannes

Right. How about the reception Graf von Einsiedel got at a Geschwadertreffen for JG3, when as a traitor he was shown the door? I guess that kind of blows your theory out of the water.
