Question about III./JG 53 in July 1941

Hi guys,

On the Tony Woods page and other places that I have seen, there is a gap from 5 July 1941 to 25 July 1941 (inclusive) where III./JG 53 has no claims for Soviet aircraft shot down. Is this possible or is the data missing ? Does anyone know or can help me find information about what claims the unit made in this time frame ?

Thanks in advance
Oquaig

Re: Question about III./JG 53 in July 1941

On the Tony Wood webpage, you can also find claim files compiled by Jim P, a contributor of this forum.

They included the Luftwaffe claims on the Eastern Front up to end November 1941, as listed in the Prien books, the most up to date source on the subject.

Most of the claims of Luftwaffe over Eastern Front in 1941-1942 are missing in Tony Wood's file. Prien's Jagdfliegerverbände series are filling the gap.

Yes I ave down loaded that but it doesn't answer the question. I was hoping there would be more info somewhere else. Prien is not available to me in any public resource and the books are too expensive. But thanks anyway.

Re: Question about III./JG 53 in July 1941

Hi Oquaig,

There were actually quite a few III./J.G. 53 aerial victory claims in the period 5 to 25 July 1941 (too many to list).

Stab III./J.G. 53 claimed seven victories
7./J.G. 53 claimed twelve victories
8./J.G. 53 claimed twelve victories
9./J.G. 53 claimed eleven victories

Oops, you are right it was there. It starts listing claims in 1944 which prompted me to skip over it.

Thank you very much again

Re: Question about III./JG 53 in July 1941

Hi guys,

It is a puzzling to me about what III./JG 53 was doing between 16 thru 22 July 1941. It was based at Kamary 14 km west of Vitebsk along with II./JG 52 during this period of time. It had no claims for VVS aircraft shot down and lost 3 aircraft shot down/written off during this period and II./JG 52 filed 8 claims for this period. This knowledge and the loss of aircraft tells a story of activity....but every account I have read glosses over this period of time. Was the group (III./JG 53) flying patrols over the quieter sectors to the north and north-east (Veliki-Luki/Toropets) ? Escort duty for I. And III. St.G 2 (which were active supporting 19 Panzer Division in the fighting at Veliki-Luki) ? Any comments....

Thanks
Oquaig
