This machine was shot down on the night of 12/13 December 1944 by an 85 Squadron´s Mosquito. Any information about the background of the crew and pilot would be welcomed too. Re: Uffz. Hans Paubel 11./NJG 1 - KIA 12/13 December 1944
Hi Adriano
Balss says it was Wnr 160138 code G9+SY and that it collided with another Bf 110 when landing at Dusseldorf. However this "other" Bf 110 is not identified.... I presume you refer to one of F/Lt Hedgecoe's or S/Ldr Burbridge's victory claims, but why do you link this loss to any of those claims? The Luftwaffe night fighters lost five other fighters that night that seems to fit far better the five claims in all made by the intruders from Britain. Best Regards Stig |

Re: Uffz. Hans Paubel 11./NJG 1 - KIA 12/13 December 1944
Hello STIG...
YES, I am trying to cross-check the losses versus the RAF claims for that night indeed. What I do have: W/C Beauchamp, DSO, DFC ( OC 157 Squadron ) claimed one BF 110 damaged SE of Ruhr ( over Aschaffenburg ). F/L Hedgecoe ( 85 Squadron ) claimed two Bf 110 - probably one from 11./NJG 1 and one from 9./NJG 1 F/L Burbridge ( 85 Squadron ) claimed one Ju 88 G-1 near Gutersloh from 6./NJG 4 and one Bf 110. I tracked down the TWO NJG 1 losses ( Bf 110 ) for that night. Do you happen to know OTHER Bf 110 losses for that night which could fill the gaps? THANKS indeed for your help. Adriano |

Re: Uffz. Hans Paubel 11./NJG 1 - KIA 12/13 December 1944
Hi Adriano
Laurent has already quoted what Balss says, so it is your choice to see if you can make any sense out of it, relating claims areas with losses. However I still believe that WNr 160138 was not part of the Intruders victories that night and looking in Boiten/MacKenzie's Vol 2 they tend to agree with this. The crew had a complete homing equipment failure and while landing Oblt Kurt Matzak collided with another Bf 110. The two Ju 88 lost at/near Gütersloh are listed as claimed by No 85 Sq. I have no claims available from Bomber Command that night, so cannot say if any of those listed were the victims of one or more defending gunner(s). Best Regards Stig |

Re: Uffz. Hans Paubel 11./NJG 1 - KIA 12/13 December 1944
STIG,
Very kind of yours to comment and put your point of view. I read somewhere that those 9/NJG 1 machines SHOULD/COULD have been attributed to F/L Hedgecoe. There are two Ju 88 losses near or close to Gutersloh and as far as I know, there is just the claim of F/L Burbridge. OF course, I will follow your advice while home, with more time to take a careful look at all the places, locations and reports. THANKS for your valuable help and support. Yours Adriano |
