Ju 88 A-1 U4+TK

Ju 88 A-1 U4+TK (Wnr. 0880119) has been pretty well documented throughout its recovery and ongoing restoration.

There's loads of information available on this aircraft at ju88.net. While browsing that website, I stumbled across a diorama of the aircraft displaying the wreckage as it was originally discovered. This diorama can be seen here: https://www.ju88.net/scale-models/u4tkmud.jpg

Now is it just me or are there bulges on the underside of the engine nacelles? I understand that the bulges are for oil coolers, but didn't they only appear on the A-4 and later variants due to the engine upgrade? It's my understanding that the A-1, with its less powerful engines, did not have ventral bulges on its nacelles, so why does the model in the diorama have them?

Re: Ju 88 A-1 U4+TK

Because the diorama maker has incorrectly used a model of an A4!

Ah, you're right! I didn't notice that even the wingtips are incorrect for an A-1.

Got another question regarding the same aircraft.

Does anyone know if the aircraft was still an A-1 when it was recovered from the lake? Was it ever converted to an A-5 while it was in the Luftwaffe?
