IV./KG26 collision at Leba

Please could somebody help me with the details of a mid-air collision in Leba, Pomerania on 20 or 26 October 1942? Two aircraft are believed to have been involved from IV./KG26 and one of them was an He 111 H-5 coded 1H+EV. I’ve found two officers, viz Oblt Georg Linge and Oblt Gerhard Salecker, plus probably four other crew members all killed. There may also have been others wounded or survived. I want the aircraft ID and full crew details for each aircraft. Does anybody know why they collided? Many thanks.

Re: IV./KG26 collision at Leba

Hello Dave,

according to the Gen.Qu. loss returns the correct WNr. are 3739 (not 3379) and 3660 (not 3360).

Regards
Leo

Re: IV./KG26 collision at Leba

Good point Leo

As per Volker Koos masterlist WNr 3360 was a P-2 and also the last one built in the WNr 3300-3400 block. I am aware that there have been listed higher numbers, up to WNr 3396 but I am not sure if they are verifiable.

Anyway the H-5 started with WNr 3501 and both your listed WNr are in that block

Cheers
Stig

PS: My 2012 copy of Steenbeck states both WNr listed by Leo, ie 3739 and 3660. Which book are you talking about Maciej?
