Hi Guys,

Can anyone tell us more regarding these three Heinkel He 111 losses, two are down in the UK but not sure about the other. All comments & leads would be really appreciated.

Regards

Melvin

Re: 3 Heinkel losses to identify

Hi, Melvin...

Interesting photos . The first photo is shown in Smith & Gallaspy's Luftwaffe Camouflage & Markings 1935-45, Vol 2 (Kookaburra) and described as a Heinkel He111H-2 sub-type, brought down during the Battle of Britain over Surrey.

Likely coded V4+~V, it carries the unit insignia of 11.Staffel, KG1 'Hindenburg', ref: 313 in Luftwaffe Emblems (2012 edition).

The second machine may be 1G+FS from 8.Staffel, KG27 'Boelcke'... not entirely sure, taken from another angle. I have noted, however, that the location may possibly be Border Hill Farm, near Chester, on 14 August, 1940. The general surrounding background appears very similar, and the angled control surfaces are in the same position. This image was previously featured on TOCH in a posting from October, 2004... sorry I can't be more specific but that's all the detail I have for it.

Hope this helps a little.

Kindest regards,

Paul

Re: 3 Heinkel losses to identify

1) 30 Aug 1940 10/KG1, WNr 3305, V4+HV at Haxted Farm, Lingfield.

2) As described by Paul.

3) 11 September Broomhill Farm, Camber, WNr 5606, V4+FA, of Stab KG1.

All quite well known shots. Several different images of each are know.

Re: 3 Heinkel losses to identify

Hi, Andy...

Could you clarify for me, please, if the first image is 10.Staffel as you have noted, or 11./KG1 as the insignia seems to be that of the latter. The last letter 'V' would normally also indicate 11.Staffel.

Thanks for your additional information on these machines .

Kindest regards,

Paul
