Question Youngest Luftwaffe Fighter Ace By 1945

Who were the youngest Luftwaffe fighter aces by 1945? I take it that the youngest German aces were probably born in 1924 and 1925.

How many air to air kills did Josef Heim had? Did he had anymore flying adventures after WWII?

Re: Youngest Luftwaffe Fighter Ace By 1945

Hi Edward

I sorted my "Asse list" by date of birth(2600 aces) and agree with Boris. But he wouldn't be the youngest ace of the war, if you were to workout the date each pilot claimed their "fifth" confirmed claim and judge it against dates of birth I'm sure there would be a few teenagers.

At the other extreme the oldest guy to claim would be Theo Osterkamp aged forty-eight Alfred Lindenberger was forty-seven and had the longest period between first and last(twenty-six years, twenty-seven including those as a bordfunker) and the longest gap(again twenty-six years).

It's a shame that nothing much has been written about Lindenberger, his story is unique. I know he was born on 22nd April 1897, survived the wars having claimed four during 1944(including three "viermots") but don't even have a date of death for him. He claimed three as a "gunner" during WW1, then in a short spell six as a pilot(all nine during 1918) flying for JG300 was usually a death sentence, but he survived that. Hopefully somebody can enlighten us about him.

Kind Regards

Johannes

Johannes,

The Nov-Dec 2019 issue of Avions (#232) has a 16 page article by Jörg Mückler on Lindenberger. He states that Lindenberger died in Nürtingen (SE of Stuttgart) on June 30, 1973.

Enjoy!

Frank.

Good morning Johannes,

you find a thrilling accout about the combats that Lindenberger fought as Kurt Jentsch's observer in Jentsch's autobiography:

Have a good Monday,

Michael

Re: Youngest Luftwaffe Fighter Ace By 1945

Good morning Johannes,

in Jentsch's book I found an anomaly about Lindenberger:
  • Jentsch and Lindenberger are generally considered to have achieved three kills in two-seaters each
  • two were scored together: 2Oct and 21Oct
  • Lindenberger has scored another one before that (29May)
  • Jentsch has scored another one after that (5Dec)
  • irritatingly, Jentsch clearly describes that Lindenberger was his gunner on 5Dec, the latter even firing the lethal shots from his observer gun
So, has Lindenberger scored one kill that usually misses in his kill list or does memory play tricks on Jentsch ?

Kind regards,

Michael
