First Spitfire Captured by the Luftwaffe
As a spinoff from another discussion on the LW board, the question came up as to the identity of the first Spitfire captured by the Luftwaffe.
Acording to Alfred Price, the Germans had four Spifires in flyable or repairable condition by the beginning of the Battle of Britain These are the candidates I could think of: Spitfire PRIB, P9331, 212 Squadron, captured in a hangar by the Germans June 1940 Spitfie I, P9317, 222 Sq, captured after wheels down landing,June 1,1940 Spitfire I,N3243, 74 Sq, landed wheels down on May 1940 |

Re: First Spitfire Captured by the Luftwaffe
Ok, I think I have the fourth and final one. the so-called French Spitfire I, which was " the 251st production aircraft of the L-serial batch...It was equiped with a three blade two pitch prop"
There is a picture of the A/C in the Spitfire book by Morgan and Shacklady. Last edited by kaki3152; 16th August 2012 at 15:27. |

Re: First Spitfire Captured by the Luftwaffe
Does anyone know which one was tested at around the summer 1940 by E-Stelle Rechlin? The machine was noted to be with a two-pitch prop.

Where any of these the one that had a Daimler Benz engine put in? I've a picture of it somewhere but if I recall correctly all the British markings were painted over.

Re: First Spitfire Captured by the Luftwaffe
Luckily, I have the May 68 issue of "Flying Review International" which has the whole story. The airplane was Spitfire Vb EN830, 234 Sq, RAF which was flown P/O Scheidhauer (French) who crash landed in the Channel Islands on November 18,1942. He was killed in the Great Escape in March 1944.
