Hikoki: Luftwaffe Aerial Torpedo Aircraft...
A “just out of the package review”….
Luftwaffe Aerial Torpedo Aircraft and Operations in World War Two By Harold Thiele Artwork by Tim Brown Hikoki 96 pages, 5 color profiles Contents: Introduction General Notes on the Airborne Torpedo German Airborne Torpedo Operations, 1939-1945, An Operational Chronology Appendices German Torpedo Aircraft, 1933-1945 Airborne Torpedoes: Operational Types and Data Chronological Listing of Allied Ships Hit by German Torpedofleiger Total of Airborne Torpedo Successes Side Views of Some of the Larger Ships Hit by German Airborne Torpedoes Personal Recollections of of Leutnant Herbert Kuntz of 4./KG26 on Torpedo Operations in the Red Sea, 1941 The He 111 as Torpedo Aircraft Contemporary Documents If you are familiar with Hikoki, you’ll recognize the layout of this book; softbound, 96 pages. A bit smaller than Classic’s “Jagdwaffe” series. In the past I have been somewhat disappointed in the phto reproduction in Hikoki books. The paper used in this book is much higher quality than that used in “Luftwaffe Fledglings” or “Hungarian Eagles”. The photographs are clearly printed. All in all an attractive book. Estimated 250 photographs. The meat is in the chronological listing, which runs for 56 pages. Using a diary approach operations are summarized in each geographical area. Interspersed are summaries giving a bigger picture which helps put the operations into perspective. An interesting book covering a fresh subject; definitely worth having. Additional information on the Northern maritime operations can be found in Andrew Brookes’ “Air War Over Russia” and Adam Claasen’s “Hitler’s Northern War, the Luftwaffe’s Ill-Fated Campaign, 1940-1945. |
