Re: August Lambert II./SG 2

Hi Chris,

Luftwaffe daily operations reports reveal that Lambert claimed nine victories on 4 May 1944, including five on one mission. He then claimed fourteen on 7 May 1944. These reports can be found in the National Archives file series HW 5.

Cheers,
Andrew A.

Re: August Lambert II./SG 2

Thanks Johannes.

When did he score his 103rd victory?
Any idea of his total score, said to be between 116 and 127?

Chris

Re: August Lambert II./SG 2

Hi Andrew,
These information appeared in the Wehrmachtberichte, which I assume was the basic material Obermaier worked from.

Hi Chris

103rd was on the day of his death 17th April 1945 and a Mustang......another contradiction to the Obermeier biography. No time given, but near the Kamenz airfield. Obviously his total was 103 !

Kind Regards

Johannes

Funny to think that 70 years after the end of WW2 we are not done with the Luftwaffe!
And how interesting incidently!

..wasn't it more or less 'standard' Luftwaffe practice to 'give' the pilot one last victory on the day of his death, if KIA ?

Re: August Lambert II./SG 2

Regarding giving a dead pilot one last victory........absolutely not, in fact most usual is that claims on last flights(death, wounded or captured) remained unconfirmed, unless some kind person did the paperwork on their behalf!

Kind Regards

Re: August Lambert II./SG 2

..two examples off the top of my head (..as we say ).. Paul Temme and Alfred Surau. But as you say that doesn't make it 'standard practice'

Re: August Lambert II./SG 2

Regarding Surau

True he does have a confirmed claim for the day of his death. As he was mortally wounded he could have completed the paperwork before his death later that sane day, or somebody could have done it for him.

Regarding Temme

If he did claim a spitfire on the day of his death........it was not confirmed. No proof he actually did make a claim that I have seen, and if he did nobody did his paperwork. But being JG 2 I wouldn't be surprised if there was no British lose to judge this. Erik Mombeeck's books might reveal more, but as far as I know they are all in French. I only have the 1943 period book, which has excellent details and photo's, but I cannot read French.

Kind Regards

Johannes
