Identity of Spitfire Sought!
Hi Guys,
My contact in Germany sent me these pics of a crashed and burning Spitfire. Unfortunately the serial number cannon be seen only the fuselage markings that were FY-A. I am not sure of the unit or time period pictures were taken, presuming 1940-41? Believed shot down by JG2. Any further info would be greatfully recieved. Re: Identity of Spitfire Sought!
Melvin,
If you check in the excellent books of Eric Mombeeck you will find in JG2 volume 2 the same prints published page 79. It is the loss of F/lt Buys shot down on 24 june 1941 (10 Spitfire claimed by Stab, II and III./JG2) Bertrand |

Re: Identity of Spitfire Sought!
The Spitfire was a Mk V R7349 and F/Lt Buys from 611 Sq was killed.

Re: Identity of Spitfire Sought!
Bertrand & Stig, many thanks for the info regarding this Spitfire, looks to me that they got the pilot F/Lt Buys out of the wreck before it became an inferno! There is a set of six crash photos of the scene, another pic shows the body covered by his parachute (unburnt), these will be added to the page of remembrance for F/Lt Buys as soon as I construct the page.
Thanks again guys, Melvin www.aircrewremembrancesociety.co.uk |
