02/01/1943:a claim by V./KG40?,Bay of Biscay

In Mediterranean Air War,vol.Three,p.232,a P-39 of 68th Observation Group(16th O Sqd,Lt Verne H.Lincoln) shot down by a Ju.88 C.6 of V./KG40 over the Bay of Biscay.

However no mention in Bloody Biscay (C.Goss)

What is the identity of the German pilot.....if the facts are accurate?

Michel

I seem to remember the loss of the P-39 is mentioned but not sure why it is in Mediterranean Air War as the loss was over the Atlantic

Chris,
P-39 loss is in MAW because it was enroute to join its Group in North Africa. I figured it belonged with the Group history. Just like other enroute losses, and the P-38s and P-39s interned in Spain and Portugal.

Enjoy!

Frank.

Frank- indeed but quite a number were lost in their way south.
Michel-Lincoln was lost 30 Dec 42 to Ofw George Heuer of 14./KG 40. See pages 26, 27, 206

Chris,
For some reason I have (had) Verne H Lincoln as lost on Jan 3, 1943, where you can find him on page 233 of MAW3. For other losses on transfer flights to North Africa see Dec 27, 1942 and Jan 15, 1943; there are probably others.

Enjoy!

Frank.

Frank: 68 OG diary says they did not arrive in North Africa until 2 Jan 43 and another entry says that 17 P-39s and a B-25 took off from Predannack on 30 Dec 42 for Gibraltar and one did not arrive. Diary says that Lincoln was attacked by a Ju 88 and crashed into the sea. Horstmann of 13./KG 40 got a 346 FS/350 FG P-39 on 5 Feb 43

Frank/Chris

On page 226 in MAW 3 there is a reference to a P-39 lost that day (uncertainty of unit involved)
If I am reading things right (Chris), 68OG lost only a single P-39 that date, so can we (well you ) unite that this is Lincoln's 39?
