B-24D 41-11760 Crash 1942-07-27

Hi!

I am looking for any crash/accident report regarding B-24 41-11760 crash in 1942-07-27 (by 343rd BS /98th BG).

The info i got is from the book The B-24 /PB4Y in Combat by Arnold Rhodes. page 142.
Where was this crash location? any crew list?

So far:

What i assume is that it was in U.S: stateside just before/in transit to Palestine.
Acc. to the IARC it was in Heath just before on the 24th, (Newark-Heath Airport, Ohio)?

Condemned in a budget report 1942 11 24

But, I can't find any info from the most common accident report websites or in other written sources.

/Johan

No such accident at Newark-Heath, OH. See http://wiki.lickingcountylibrary.info/Airplane_Crashes

I gathered the overseas flight started in Florida and via the South Atlantic route to the MTO.

Re: B-24D 41-11760 Crash 1942-07-27

From the WWW,
41-11760 crashed 27/7/42 was this a/c a 98 BG a/c ?
41-11814 - 98BG , Tunisia, 24/7/42.
41-11876, 27/7/42, South Carolina.

Is it possible that the a/c was "814" and that the date was somehow misinterpreted, "4" to "7" ?

Hi Alex.

41-11760 Acc. to the book yes, but it would be nice to have one more source/accident report that could confirm that.

41-11814 (344th BS) went down en-route to Palestine over Africa 23/24 July and 344th BS was first squadron to arrive on 25/7.
But i have that listed the plane crash in Near Misérié, Chari-Baguirmi, West CHAD, not over Tunisia as Christopher Shores book do. That doesn't match the ferry routes/link over Africa.
Lets see when AFHRA opens. They have the report.

Johan,
In an online AAHS Journal (Vol. 37, 1992) it says that 41-11760 was named 'Blonde Bomber', 343rd BS/98th BG. The squadron had a 'Blonde Bomber II' later on.

Perhaps the name can give a little lead to trawl the net.

Leendert

I start to wonder if "Blonde Bomber ??-?????" might be 41-11760?
acc to B-24 Nose Art Name directory, by Wallace Forman, 41-11760 picture exist, page 95.
Blond Bomber 41-11895 might the same name soon after 41-11760 crashed. Both plane were in same squadron. Reasonable?

A little on Blond Bomber (41-11895) and Blond Bomber II (41-23659?) Both flown by Daniel A Story. Note the link has Blond Bomber II as 41-23859? (a typo most likely).
