Re: Do217 crash 27/28 Sep 43 at Dedelstorf
Hiya all,
My next plea please, does any one help with information that was shot down by W/C Hoare on the 27/28 Sep 43. I have seen something of this claim somewhere so certain this was a recorded and a confirmed claim? Hopefully there is something photo wise of this aircraft or crew? Thanks Danny

Sorry yet again-nothing recorded Do 217-wise (or Do 17) at Dedelsdorf (note spelling). Loads of night fighters lost in combat that night so Theo Boiten might be able to help

No need to apologize, you were right! As someone with a soft spot for this former I./KG66 Fliegerhorst, I can confirm that the correct spelling is DedelsTorf rather than -Dorf, see attached photo of the sign in front of the Flugleitung (control tower). "Gründlich" as they are, the Germans even consulted an expert (Prof. Dr. Ludwig Bückmann) about the correct spelling, see attached document. English members of this board may be surprised by the relation with the English "Thorp/Thorpe". Very best regards, Marcel PS Source for the document is the excellent history "Dedelstorf - Eine Kaserne in der Heide - Geschichte des Standortes Dedelstorf 1935 bis 1994" Last edited by Marcel van Heijkop; 25th November 2020 at 23:29. And if I remember correctly, either of those in a place name in England is an indication that the name is Danish (or Viking) in origin.

I believe the word goes much further back than the Vikings. I also believe the British today has kept the old meaning, ie a small settlement, while in Scandinavia it has become synonomous with a very small single living place. Cottage style. Another favourite word of mine is Skyfall (now famous via a James Bond movie). That word goes all the way back to Ragnarok, and that is ancient.... Sorry Nick There are just moments which you simply cannot resist.... Cheers Stig |
