Merchant Navy British Empire Medal recipiant
Hi guys
Way out of my depth! I'm researching a Merchant Navy recipient of the British Empire Medal gazetted in 1943 in relation to Alfred William WALDEN, bosun aboard the freighter Dan-Y-Bryn. I'm particularly interested to know whether the award related to his efforts to prevent crated Hurricanes (for Russia) from damaging his ship during rough seas (November 1941). Would there be a citation? Cheers Brian Last edited by Brian; 3rd January 2018 at 13:10. |

Over a year us a big gap which would indicate to me it probably was not awarded for the Nov 41 event

Re: Merchant Navy British Empire Medal recipiant
Hi Brian
Award Citation as published in London Gazette on 16 July 1943 for: Geoffrey Dennis Griffin, Fourth Officer, MBE Alfred William Walden, Boatswain, BEM George Ernest Sagar, Able Seaman, BEM "The ship has taken part in several convoys which have been heavily attacked by U-boats and aircraft and the vessel has been subjected to heavy air attack on numerous occasions when in port. The spirited defence put up by the ship and the loyal and willing co-operation of the crew prevented her from sustaining serious damage and she has now returned safely to the United Kingdom after having performed much good work. During the vessel's last voyage she was in a port which was heavily attacked by enemy aircraft and the Fourth Officer, Boatswain Walden and Able Seaman Sagar displayed outstanding courage and devotion to duty during the raid and helped to extinguish numerous incendiary bombs which fell on the quayside, and thus helped to save the vessel from possible damage." |
