Belly landed Bf109 Red 3 at Epinoy (?) 1940
Hi all,
Attached is a picture of a Bf 109 red 3 that probably belly landed at the Epinoy-Cambrai airfield in 1940. Does anyone have more information about his one? The emblem and WNr are hard to identify. Thanks in advance, Rudi. Last edited by RudiS; 23rd April 2016 at 16:04. |

Emblem looks like an old boot I/JG77?
Regards

For me it looks like the "flying shoe" from the 7./JG 54. But the tactical number does not match for that unit. :-( The plane is a Bf 109 E-1.
Btw, is it possible to get a scan without the enlargements for my website?

Hi all,
Thanks for the feedback. It looks like it's a 2nd Staffel a/c. Not sure about the emblem. Very difficult to identify. The same goes for the WNr. I hope these scans might help. Regards, Rudi. Last edited by RudiS; 23rd April 2016 at 16:03. |

Re: Belly landed Bf109 Red 3 at Epinoy (?) 1940
Hi,
Cambrai, Cambrai-Niergnies, Cambrai-Süd. May 1940: I./JG 2 I./JG 3 II./JG 3 and ... I./JG 21 infortunatly code position AND colour doesn't match with 1./JG 21. (this was my first tought too) I./JG 77? Can be since the unit was in the vicinity on 20-May. But, frankly, there is something on cowling BUT is it an emblem? And code number style matches with I./JG 3. Regards, Franck. |

Looks like WNr.3378 or WNr.3373 ? and I agree with René, it looks like the I./JG77 'Tattered Boot' insignia in white with black details.

I'm certain it's the 'Tattered Boot' too, the two darkish dots at the top is the giveaway I had a similar exercise with a different machine with the same emblem.

Quote:
OK 3./JG 77 then. Rudi: no red dot behind the cross? I was looking in my files but didn't succeed to get it back; will check again. 3478 or 3475. For sure second number is not a 3. Regards, Franck. |
