Re: Α Ju 52 at the coast of Salonika
Remi,
there is something wrong with it, these men you mentioned were lost as follows: 29.05.43 Ju 52 (DD+CX, W.Nr. 7103) 100% von Sq. 227 abgeschossen und ins Meer bei Milos notgewassert, FF. unverletzt, BF. Uffz Greh (vw), BM. Uffz Scholz (vw), BS. Uffz Toth (vw), Passagier Ogfr, Georg Hiepe (+), My question is: what happened in Salonika, crew? |

Re: Α Ju 52 at the coast of Salonika
We deducted from Wn that is the same plane, on reports is given as 100 % lost, but seems if the plane in your picture is really 7103, that damage grade is wrong, nd that plane has been "geborgen", I supposed towed/schleppt to the port, important also is to try to locate the PQ 48534/23 , really near Milos ??
The 7103 was traveling from Milos to Athen, so no way for it to cruise near Saloniki.. Here there is a bit of mystery Rémi |

Re: Α Ju 52 at the coast of Salonika
Hello,
Two days later (29 May, 1943), another Ju 52 fell to the guns of 227 Squadron pilots, C6+ES/7103 of Seetrnsptstfl.1 being the victim, onboard which one passenger (a marine) was killed and three crew wounded. Flg Off Red Modera (EL460/U) led Sgts Keith Thomas (EL552/S) and A. D. Hay (JL708/A) on a stern attack while Plt Off Jack Phillips (JL533/K) came in from head-on scoring strikes on its port engine and wing following which it alighted on the sea just as Modera (from Kenya) opened fire from astern. Thomas and Hay then carried out a strafing attack. The Beaufighters then turned their attention to an accompanying Ar 196, D1+IH of 1./126,flown by Fw Michalek, Plt Off Phillips made the initial attack and scored hits, followed by the other three. The floatplane flew towards a nearby island, ditched in a bay on fire and the crew were seen running towards a village. The pilot survived unhurt but his observer died. The Arado was strafed until it blew up and the Ju 52 was seen burning fiercely. But for 227 Squadron the loss of six crews in four weeks was a rude awakening to its new role of running down German capacity to supply the Aegean islands by sea and air. However six German aircraft had been shot down in return and a number of small vessels and caiques had been destroyed or damaged. Re: Α Ju 52 at the coast of Salonika
Thanks Col, the Arado was:
Ar 196 A (D1+IH, W.Nr. 0298) 100% FF. Fw. Michalek, mit BO. Ltn. Josef Müller (+), bei Begleitung einer Ju 52 Phaliron-Milos von 4 Beaufightern angegriffen. Notlandung am 29.05.43 vor dem Hafen Lutra der Insel Kythnos, The Ju 52 must have been the (DD+CX, W.Nr. 7103) 100% mit FF. unverletzt, BF. Uffz Greh (vw), BM. Uffz Scholz (vw), BS. Uffz Toth (vw), Passagier Ogfr. Georg Hiepe (+), The Salonika incident probably occurred before that date and is still for me cloudy. Was G6+ES renamed to DD+CX ? |
