Where can we see the Wnr. on a JU88 ?
Again, all is in title:
where can we find the Wnr. on a JU88 ? I believe that it is on the manufacturer plate located under the tail wheel, but is there any other area where the Wnr. is mentioned ? In the cockpit, for instance, don't we have any inscription /plate ? Thanks for your support... GC |

Plate was under fuselage, beside the (bola) entrance. Steel plate (fire proof) supposed be on bulkhead near/rear of the tailwheel. This is missing on RAF Ju 88 R-1 plane, someone has cut part bulkhead away. Steel plate is blank on USA(A)F Ju 88 D-1/trop example, because of "export". 88.xxx Part plates on all larger components, wings tail, ailerons. Some carry Serie, others not. Plates marked "Vorrat." were spares.

Shape and size fits, but this was (likely) "just" fuselage plate. But location differed of them, some had them above the window.
Mainplate (is stated be) on Ju 88 fuselage underside, beside or rear of bola, near entrance. Problem is that most photos are too grainy to see or read. Last edited by edNorth; 15th June 2018 at 01:59. Reason: edited, can be mainplate (four field version) |

Nope, thats the Gondola bulkhead plate (Plywood bulkhead). I read same on USAAF D-1/trop and it was OPEL made. This one is Henschel made Gondola.
One type of main plate, this came from Bd5 (Bernburg). Others had more fields but still very ease to copy. Norwegian restorers did so. But there are factors to distingush betweewn fake and originals. Have pictures of over 200 different examples. Found on east front (Tim) area, published on Reibert forum (unknown photographer). 0881523 Ju 88 D-1 [6M+LM] 4.(F)/11 (Fliegerkorps VIII East) OPS (F) missing (100%) unk location (Tim) 08.01.1942 F Ofw. There should be some sort of document regulating the different shields. I've located an "Anweisung für die Anbringung von Halbfabrikatschildern" for the Ju 86 which gives details on what type of plate was to be used for each subassembly illustrated with a drawing of where it was to be placed on the subassembly.
This document also mentiones a "Flugzeug Abnahme-schield"which is in itself a suggestion that it might not be the same shield as the formal W.Nr.-plate placed somewhere else e.g. at the tail of the aircraft as is often seen. This "Flugzeug Abnahme-schield" was attached on the outside left side below cockpit on Junkers aircraft - see Chris' photo on #3. Apparently DLH and RLM aircraft had different type of shields. Sometimes a second plate was placed below the original one if the aircraft was modified to a different version, thus receiving a new designation. |

Mikael, I know of this. And have Norm for plates. Your text applied to many Ju aircraft, incl. Ju 52/3m, Ju 88 just did not, and different types used. Type shown is Abnahme Schild. Other below cockpit usually had four fields (not shown because of copyright issues). But as the five factories did not always use same location, the "general" location is given in #2. Besides NEVER (proofable) found foto of mainplate Ju 88 below cockpit, on the side, like Ju 52 had. But the maybe I have been lied to 50 times.
Looking in my HD there appears some Ju 88 had main plate in under nose window position, found one "three field" plate on one D-1, thats same as first position as Chris Goss suggested. Plate of 0119 was under fuselage, near Bola door. I have picture or original but can not post, due copyright. Problem: each time fuselage bottom was painted, it dissapeared under paint. Found one Ju 88 C-6 with plate on cockpit side, near bottom, directly under pilot seat. So location of plate, it appears more positions were used than above in #2.
