FOTO FLUGZEUG Messerschmitt Bf109 Me109 mit Zusatztank in JFS7 Nancy Essay #01
Good morning to all.
The enclosed photograph, of a Bf 109 (apparently a F model) whose werknummer is painted onto the spinner of the machine X592 (seems 2592 or 8592) was recently sold at 883 Euros. What is the story behind this particular machine that made the picture's price rise so high? It was supposed to have being flown at JFS 7 at Nancy....there was another shot from this same machine from 3/4 rear...showing (if memory does not fail me) a number 2 painted onto the fuselage. Maybe some of you that are experts on Bf 109 can enhance my knowledge about the rarity of this photograph. A. OBS: Be all sure, I was not the winner of the photo...not at 883 Euros (even if I had them available!!). |

Hello Adriano,
the photo shows the Erla built Bf 109 F-4 trop WNr. 8542, black 2. The WNr. is clearly visible on the shot from 3/4 rear. Regards Leo |

The reality is that something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. I have seen it in other areas. Sometimes, the reasons are personal, other times there is a lack of knowledge among the buyers. In one area where I have some expertise, I know it happens that some people assume something as opposed to doing their own research.

This I understand was a III./JG 27 aircraft on its way to the Mediterranean theatre of operations. Another photo of this aircraft by memory was sold for EUR 508.00.
I find these prices incredible, and I really see nothing spectacular about this aircraft, but if the buyers are willing to pay that much, that is their right. Sinisa |

Leo, Ed and Sinisa,
Thank you for pointing me the correct werknummer and the unit it flew (III/JG 27). I thought this machine could be related to some of the "Experten" or was one of the first related to the trials with the belly fuel tank.... It is indeed amazing what one do find...some times a "gem" do appear and we are lucky to get it....some times there indeed must be a personal interest related... This was, nevertheless a wonderful picture...Lucky owner who, apparently will not miss too much the amount paid for it. Thanks for enlightning me on this particular machine. A. |

I too find it amazing how much somebody paid for such a photo. Going rate publishers will pay for such a photo is €15 so you would have to wait many moons to have any chance of recouping your money. However, as has been said before buyer was prepared to pay that & seller must be rubbing hands in glee. Last time I went to New York for a week this is just under what I paid (including flights). Puts it into perspective?

salut mon ami Adriano, Hi Chris and the others folks
a high price maybe only because the picture is beautiful ? it is a superb Bf109F, nice exhaust fumes, with sand filter, the light is great , it is rather an unusual subject .. However, money pollutes everything. Don't even mention the aircraft parts which are offered for sale, some parts could be sold for a fortune, thus triggering looting and unrespectful digs. And I could not believe seeing "fake" aircraft parts appear. When money is at stake, all is permitted, what a pity. GC |

Let us look at old comic books from the 1960s. Some are sold for hundreds or thousands of dollars while others are sold for under 10 dollars.
Speculators sometimes turn such things into commodities, buying them at a high price on speculation that the price will only go up in the future. After a time, collectors with average means can no longer afford them. |
