Luftgaukommandos, list of downed allied aircrew (NARA – collection RG242)

Hi,

The American National Archives mention in RG 242 (Collection of Foreign Records Seized) under identifier 7329975 ‘ Lists of Downed Allied Aircrews 1954 – 1958 – Records of Luftgaukommandos, List of Downed Allied Aircrew. Arranged by downed Allied aircraft report type and thereunder numerically by report number’. The NARA website also mention : ‘ This series consists of German-created lists of air crew members. Information includes date and location, and sometimes the time of aircraft downing; type of aircraft; and the name, grade, and serial number of crew members. Report of downed airborne troops are also included. The records are in German.’ (https://catalog.archives.gov/id/7329975)

Is any additional information regarding these files available ? Does anyone has any experience with the contents of these files ? Is it easy to obtain a copy from Nara ?

Many thanks in advance and best regards

Luc

Hi Luc,

Had a quote to get the files copied in the mid 1990s it was around 2k.
As Alex said hopefully they'll be digitised. Having been doing research at President Harry Truman's Library & Archives recently there is a big emphasis on 'digitising' papers in the countries archives by the NARA.

Regards

Andy B.

Hi Alex and Andy B.,

Many thanks for your replies.
2K is slightly over my budget (of the next 10 years)…

Let’s hope that they make them soon digitally available. They seem to be adding digital copies of files of RG242 from time to time. Today I noticed some (for me) new ones such as https://catalog.archives.gov/id/142694377

Best regards

Are you looking for a specific Report or all of them?

I (Revi16/Mike F./mjfur) no longer live in the Wash DC area, but Michael C. at the bottom of the thread may be able to help.

Luftgaukommandos, list of downed allied aircrew (NARA – collection RG242)

Hi Revi 16,

Many thanks for your reply.

The files are considerably bigger that I thought and to have a digital copy made would be very expensive.

I have contacted NARA and asked them if they intend to make these files digitally available in the near future.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed…

Best regards

Luc

Re: Luftgaukommandos, list of downed allied aircrew (NARA – collection RG242)

Hi,

This is the reply I received from Nara :

Thank you for your inquiry to the National Archives and Records Administration concerning your interest in copies of records from the series Lists of Downed Allied Aircrews, 1954 - 1958 in Record Group 242, Entry A1 1067.

If you are interested in ordering all of the files in this series consists of 33 files totaling approximately 3000 pages.

With requests this large, our policy is to process files in batches of three. Each batch takes approximately 30-60 days to process. We will work on the next batch after payment and delivery of copies/scans has been made for the prior batch. Considering the number of case files of interest, to process your complete order will take approximately 10 to 20 months.

Our reproduction fee for paper or digital copies is $0.80 per page with a minimum mail order fee of $20.00. For the entire series, the fee will total approximately $2400. This is an estimate. The final cost will be determined upon reproduction.

Please let me know if you would like to proceed with this order. If you plan to order all of the files in the series, we will begin by providing you a quote for the first three files in the series, unless you specify certain files you would like to receive first.

A more expedient option is to hire a researcher who can make copies for you. A list of researchers familiar with our holdings and processes can be found on our website: https://www.archives.gov/research/hire-help/locations.html

Alternatively, if there are specific files you are interested in, please let us know the files you want to request and we can provide you with an estimate for just those files. A file list for this series is available in the catalog: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/7329975.

I've also attached scans of the first two pages from the file J25A to J300A as you requested.

We hope that this assists you with your research.

So slightly over my budget …

Best regards

Luc

There are outside researchers who will do the work but I'm reluctant to post any.
