350th FG - 5 a/c from Predannack Feb,5th 1943
Hello,
Anyone have serial numbers of the five P-39(P-400?)'s that took off from Predannack, Cornwall on the 5th February, 1943 ? One 42-4518 force landed in Ireland, another possible was 42-4480(?) involved in a mid air collision over French Moroco. A third possibly 42-4527 landed in Portugal. Pilots were - Lt.Ducket. Lt. Charles Kirchner (Landed Ireland). Lt. Henry M. Nelson ( Shot down ). Lt. Paul W. Redford. Lt. Clyde H. Wilson. There used tone a website that gave all details of allied a/c in Portugal cannot find it today. Thanks for any help Alex |

Re: 350th FG - 5 a/c from Predannack Feb,5th 1943
The 350 FG history at AFHRA adds little. Lt Gerard R Duket and Paul W Tedford made it OK. They became separated in cloud. Wilson emerged from cloud 10 miles north of Bordeaux, followed the coast to Spain and landed at a Spanish (not Portuguese) airfield when his fuel read zero. Nelson not seen again (got by 13./KG 40). Charles M Kircherner became lost and landed in Northern Ireland. Note the different spelling of the names?

2/Lt Charles M KIRSCHNER O-885369 is tge correct spelling based on the family history research I did.
And here is the Portuguese website. https://www.portugal1939-1945.org/en/home-2/ https://www.portugal1939-1945.org/po...rto-de-lisboa/

Hello Dennis,
Thanks for the correct spelling, I missed the "s" I wrote it down correctly but typed without. Also for the Portugal links, they are the one I sought. Alex |

Just reading this again, to clarify Chris's statement, Charles Kirschner landed in County Wexford, Ireland, not Northern Ireland. He wasn't interned and was sent accross the border to Northern Ireland very soon after.

Re: 350th FG - 5 a/c from Predannack Feb,5th 1943
Hi, Everyone. There was a set of pictures of a P-400 (long 20mm nose cannon) with a buckled propeller, surrounded by Luftwaffe personnel, that appeared in German E-Bay some seven years ago. I wonder if one of these 350FG P-400s could be this airplane?
For that matter, what was the origin of the P-39 that Stabing. HW Lerche flew in "Luftwaffe Test Pilot"? There was some talk that it was a Eastern front capture. The only information comes from his book (P 104):"[i]n June 1943 the first captured damaged Bell P-39 was reported repaired and fully airworthy." Perhaps Lerche's P-39 was actually a P-400? |

The one that was shot down came down in the sea not on land so I would say highly unlikely
