Re: info wanted about Johnnie Johnson over Dieppe

Hi,

Just to confirm what has already been said, I have the details for 19 August 1942 from the 610 Sqdn ORB and Johnson's Combat Report, as follows:

07:40 - 09:10, Johnson flew Spitfire VB EP.254 -B, claiming one FW 190 destroyed, sharing an Me 109 destroyed with PO Smith and F/Sgt. Creagh, and damaging an FW 190.

11:20 - 12:55, Johnson flew Spitfire VB EP.254 -B, making no claims.

14:00 - 15:20, Johnson again flew Spitfire VB EP.254 -B, making no claims despite firing at two FW 190s from long range.

Cheers,
Andrew A.

By the way, how likely is it that the italians actually flew a 190 over Dieppe ? Was it a misidentification by Johnnie Johnson ?

I was wondering the same. Could a scoreboard of the rudder of the 190 have looked like a white cross perhaps?

Hi,
I has similar thoughts, but also wondered if it was actually an italian radial fighter which was mistaken for a FW 190, but I don't know much about italian fighters, maybe a visiting a/c from the med ?
however something on the 190 must have made him think that it was carrying italian markings.
cheers
Jerry

Well, if I recall correctly, he mentions it was a very experienced pilot flying the "italian fw190". The chances of it being a german with weird markings or a white rudder of something are bigger than it being a good italian pilot imho. Surely the best italian pilots were used in other theatres of war.
