Blenheim crash Western Desert code "YH"
Can anyone identify this Blenheim crash in what is presumably the Western Desert? The Squadron code appears to be "YH" which I can not identify.

Re: Blenheim crash Western Desert code "YH"
Hello,
Already did that. Some may fit. But it looks in the photo that the serial number has been deliberately distorted. However the "numbers" marked on the rudder look to start with 76##. The only 11 Sqdn a/c that I can find was Z7640, lost on 5th May '42. Some others before that date might be - 13/02/41 - T2166 . 17/06/41 - V5946. 02/07/41 - Z5887. 28/11/41 - Z7703. 12/12/41 - Z7909. 27/12/41 - L9308. 01/01/42 - T2226. 19/02/42 - R3872. I could find no info on the loss of Z7968 - 15/03/42 or the five(5) losses,R3911;V5992;Z7803;Z7896;Z9574 on the 9th April 42, or Z7506 on the 22/04/42. Good hunting, Alex |

Can you decipher the serial number from your original file/photo?

Re: Blenheim crash Western Desert code "YH"
Don't forget that unit code YH was also worn on Blenheims by 21 Squadron. They were of course a UK based unit, in 2 Group, but they did a detachment to Malta from 26/12/41 to 14/03/42. During this time they lost 12 Blenheims, one of which crashed near Tripoli thus making it a possible for the identity of the aircraft in your photograph. In addition to this, they returned to the UK by being disbanded on 14/03/42 and re-established on 15/03/42, at Bodney. But their Blenheims of course, remained on Malta and were used, possibly still bearing the YH codes.

Re: Blenheim crash Western Desert code "YH"
Oops, I 'm getting very forgetful and didn't include details of the Blenheim I mentioned above:
Z7271 – 29/01/42 with 21 Squadron at Luqa when it flew into debris from the leader's bombs in an attack on buildings along the coast road east of Tripoli and crashed. F/L E.Fox and P/O R.E.Taylor were killed and are buried in Tripoli War Cemetery, and Sgt A.L.Pepper survived and was made PoW.
