Need StaKap info for I./ZG1 during 1939-40

Hello,

I have Hptm. Horst Lehrmann as the StaKap of 2./ZG1 during the Western Campaign of May-June of 1940. He achieved two victories during that campaign with that unit, one in May and a second on June 1st.

1) Can anyone confirm that he was the 2 Staffel Kap and what were his dates in that position? Does anyone know a source for photos of him or his aircraft during that period?

2) Does anyone know if Werner Streib was Kap of 2 Staffel, and if so, what were his dates in that position?

3) Can anyone fill in the list of Kap for 1, 2 and 3 Staffel of ZG1 from 1.9.39 through the end of June, 1940, and their dates of service?

4) I'm still trying to obtain a copy of the I./ZG1 KTB that is known to exist from 10.39 through 6.40. Does anyone have a copy of same that they would be willing to share?

Thanx,

1./ZG1:
00.00.39-06.09.39 Maj. Karl Hammes
06.09.39-01.07.40 Olt. Martin Lutz (> Staka 1./Erpr.Gr.210)
2./ZG1:
01.05.39-02.06.40 Hptm. Horst Lehrmann
06.06.40-22.06.40 Olt Werner Streib (> Staka 2./NJG1)
3./ZG1:
01.05.39-02.09.39 Hptm. Wendelin v.Muellenheim-Rehberg

So your photo could be of 2N+AL.

Regards

May be 2N+AK, as K for 2 Staffel?

Also, in Armand van Ishoven's book "Messerschmitt Bf110 at war", on page 53 Oblt. Viktor Moelders recalls:

" As my StaffelKapitan, Major Hammes, had been shot down by polish fighters, I had taken over the command of Staffel."

Its stange...

Re: Need StaKap info for I./ZG1 during 1939-40

Doug/Larry,

This helps a lot THANKS!

I note that you don't carry Maj. Karl Hammes as the StaKap of 1./ZG1. He was certainly shot down and was killed in a 1./ZG1 a/c, 2N+IH, early in the Polish Campaign. Every other source that I've seen indicates that this Reserve Officer was StaKap of 1./ZG1 when this happened. You don't propose anyone else in your listing for StaKap of 1 Staffel during this period. Do you have any further thoughts on this issue?

Does anyone else have detail and cited sources for any further info on the Stab positions for I./ZG1 during 1939-40, or some of the missing info on StaKap and Stab positions for II./ZG1?

Regards,

Re: Need StaKap info for I./ZG1 during 1939-40

Erwin Bacsila was Gruppenadjutant of II./ZG1 in early stages, flying Bf109D and E's, before he was transferred to 11.(N)/LG 2 as StaKa.

And Yes, Larry, that Bf110C 2N+AM with severla abschussebalken on fin is directly Rolf Kaldrack's aircraft during French campaign, as he was 4./ZG1 StaKA.

I. Gruppe ZG 1:
1.5.39 - 13.12.39 Maj Joachim-Friederich Huth
14.12.39 - 22.6.40 Hptm Wolfgang Falck

7.9.1939 – 1 July 40, Oblt. Martin Lutz (Staffel became 1./Erpr.Gr. 210);

2./ ZG 1
1.09.39 - 6 Sept 39, Hptm.Horst Lehrmann
6 June 40 – 26 July 40, Oblt. Günther Radusch (Or W.Streib?), (Staffel became 2./NJG 1);

3./ZG 1
1.09.39 - 2.9.39, Hptm. Wendelin von Müllenheim-Rehberg, (Bf110C, shot down in aerial combat);
3.9.1939 - 26.06.40 - Oblt.Walter Ehle, (Staffel became 3./NJG 1);

II. Gruppe ZG 1:
15.5.39 - 5.2.40 Maj Hellmuth Reichardt
5.40 - 26.6.40 Hptm Friedrich-Karl Dickoré

4./ZG 1
Hptm.Hans-O. Winterer was StaKa during Polish campaign.
??? - 26 June 40 - Hptm. Rolf Kaldrack (Staffel became 7./ZG 76)

5./ZG 1
??? - ??? - Oblt. Walter Kienzle (tansferred?)
??? - 13 May 40 - Hptm. Roderich Küppers, (KiA, Bf110C, shot down by AAA fire)
13 May 40 - 26 june 40 - ??

6./ZG 1

Re: Need StaKap info for I./ZG1 during 1939-40

Your remarks about this guy rang a bell so I investigated further and discovered that I have a lot more about him. It appears that there is a swath of data that I somehow neglected to pass to Larry deZeng and this it did not get into our master file.
Anyway, Please consider the following:

HAMMES, Karl.
(DOB: 03.96).
08.14 was an artillery officer.
WW I trf to the air force, flying as an observer.
(n.d.) trf to Jasta 35.
09.09.17 Oblt., badly WIA, flew no more missions for the duration.
1920s took up a career as an opera singer (!) performing in such top venues such as the Kroll Opera House and the State Opera in Vienna.
06.37 joined the Luftwaffe.
19.07.37 appt Staka 1./JG 132.
03.38 promo to Hptm.
01.11.38 appt Staka 4./ZG 141.
01.05.39 appt Staka 1./ZG 76.
01.09.39 Maj.?, appt Staka 1./ZG 1 (to 06.09.39 KIA).
06.09.39 Maj., Staka 1./ZG 1 KIA while escorting Ju 87s, shot up fatally by PZL P.11c fighters NE of Warsaw.

I am positive that I have seen photos of the plane crashed with Hammes' temporary grave next to it.

This explains things a bit!

Doug
