No.620 Squadron Codes

Hi,

Is there any definite date that No.620 Squadron began using the codes D4. The squadron and Station ORB does not record anything.

Thank you

Re: No.620 Squadron Codes

Steve. They were using both codes from March 44. QS from formation in June 43 as a
bomber sqn. and D4 in March when they expanded strength so required separate codes (as Airborne / Transport).

They were used until disbandment in 1946. Examples....
QS-G EF203 Aug. 1943 Stirling III
QS-B LJ875 Sept. 44 (Arnhem) Stirling IV
D4-Y LJ566 March 44 Stirling IV
D4-X PP375 May 45 Halifax VII
At Arnhem they retained the June 1944 "D-Day" bands on the fuselage but much narrower (none on wings).

Regards
Nick

Re: No.620 Squadron Codes

As per Combat Codes (Flintham/Thomas) 620Sq used D4 codes on
Stirling 3.44 - 7.45
Halifax 5.45 - 7.46

With regard to QS code they say
Stirling 8.43 - 7.45
Halifax 5.45 - 9.46

Cheers
Stig
