FW190 III/JG2 lost, Normandy 16 July 1944
Can anyone give me details of losses by this Gruppe on this date? I am looking for two losses on a single sortie to Spitfires. I assume they would be flying the Fw190A-8?

Re: FW190 III/JG2 lost, Normandy 16 July 1944
Hello,
From the book of J.B. Frappé "La Luftwaffe face au débarquement allié" : - On 16 July 1944, 2 Fw 190A-8 were lost (WKNr 731022 and 172964) in Caen area ; the pilots Lt. Hans WURM (9./JG2) and Lt. Karl-Heinz ELSNER (10./JG2) were MIA From the John Foreman's book "Fighter Command war diaries July 1944-May 1945" : - On 16 July 1944 : "A flight from 602 Squadron fought Fw 190s near Bayeux and claimed 1:0:1. It is believed that they shot down two of III./JG 2." Bayeux is located very close to Caen and in July 1944 N°602 Squadron was equiped with Spitfire Mk IXb . Pierre |

Re: FW190 III/JG2 lost, Normandy 16 July 1944
Many thanks Rene and Pierre I suspect one of these was the victim of Asp Jacques Remlinger,602 Squadron, the other that of SLdr Chris Le Roux. Remlinger was only awarded a "damaged" but it seems this would have been his only confirmed kill of the war. CieldeGloire states he gained a victory on 21 February 1944 but I believe it was actually awarded to PO Ian Blair in a Spitfire VII.

But it smiles nevetheless
One side not the victory of Blair was on 20 February 1944. The date of 21 is I think given by The Big Show. |
