9 April 1943 , 486 Sq claims near Etretat
Hello gentlemen ,
That day several 486 Sq pilots shared a Fw190 in that area in Normandy. Does someone know when the fight took place ( in the morning ? ) and if possibly the victim was identified ? Seems not to be either a JG2 or JG26 loss. I do not have the book " Wild Winds " unfortunately , so if a brave soul could help... Zorglub |

Re: 9 April 1943 , 486 Sq claims near Etretat
Yes, 486 Sqn was equipped with Typhoons at that time. A formation of 9 was attacked by 2 Fw190s and in the brief combat that ensued strikes were seen on both Fws and small explosion on one - which flew of towrds Gris Nez trailing thick black smoke. The Typhoons went on the attack 3 minesweepers off Le Havre at 1935 hours so the combat with the Fws was probably about 1925 hrs. 486 Sqn were credited with one damaged and one probably destroyed.

Re: 9 April 1943 , 486 Sq claims near Etretat
Hello Chris ,
Thanks , but I have another claims which could solve a mystery . On 14 March 1943 in the morning , F/S Fitzgibbon claimed a Fw190 40 miles south Beachy Head . I just wonder if it was the Fw190 lost near Fecamp with its pilot. This could explain why Fitzgibbon crash-landed out of petrol on return. How did you get the information being Fw190 WNr 5346 , Fw D. Sahre of 5(F)/123 ? Was it a special fitted Fw190 for recco ? Zorglub |

Re: 9 April 1943 , 486 Sq claims near Etretat
Hello Zorglub
You are quite correct in supposing that Fitzgibbon ran out of fuel. After losing his No.1 he pursued the Fw190 south, overhauling it at 350 IAS and expending all his ammunition. The Fw's speed dropped to 160 mph, it lost height and the starboard u/c leg dropped. He saw the wheel hit the water before he remembered his fuel and immediately turned for base. He did not see the Fw crash. He was vectored for Friston but ran out of fuel before he could identify the airfield in the thick haze, making a forced landing at Tarring Neville, north of Newchurch. The time and place of the combat was given was 11.15 hours, 35-40 miles south of Beachy Head. Fitzgibbon claimed a 'probable' but this was upgraded to confirmed destroyed by Fighter Command HQ. I have contacted Christopher Shores who collated the information on German losses but he is unable to identify which of many sources (mainly other enthusiasts) this came from. It was nearly 25 years ago... Chris |
