B. 17 serial 42-5849(384 BG)

Hello
I search some information on the circumstance in which the B.17 42-5849
was shot down to CHAMPEAUX between RENNES and VITRE(FR.)the 16
September 1943 ( mission NANTES ) Thank you jean paul

Named "Hell's Belles II" of 384th BG, piloted by Lt. John A. Butler. Listed as shot down, apparently, by German Fighter and crashed. 2 crew evaded, 3 KIA, 5 POW, MACR 722.

No. 2 engine was shot up by German fighters, left wing and the inboard fuel tank were on fire. Seven of the crew managed to bail out before the B-17 crashed.

You have many informations of this crash in " La Bretagne dans la bataille de l'Atlantique" Roger Huguen Editions Coop Breizh.(PAGES 530 à 535)
It's a very good book with many informations about the raids and crashes of RAF and USAAF over Britanny ( Nantes, St Nazaire, Rennes, Brest...).
