Re: Allied loss at Rimini (1944)
Hello,
Possibly another Martin's type - Baltimore. From AIR-27-519-9 and 10 we know that on the night 2/3 July 1944 special close work in front of the bomb line in Arezzo was carried by 12 Baltimores of No. 55 Sqn RAF and Baltimore V FW299/Y was lost near Rimini on armed recce Arezzo-Fano-Rimini-Sansepulcro. Zoran,
My deepest gratitude for this information. You surely gave me a North. Photo of the wreck do not give us a clue to the serial number or codes. All the best A. |

Re: Allied loss at Rimini (1944)
Zoran,
Just for curiosity, would you have information about a Bristil Beaufighter lost near Rimini ? The images arrived yesterday, after a long delay....and the left wing (watching from the front) looks like that of a Beaufighter. The filter on the side, near the engine nacelle really looks like...and the Baltimore and Maryland did not have that on the left wing (watchin from the front - or right wing if you are sitting on the cockpit). So, it looks like a Beaufighter crash - near or close to Rimini. Any help in ID the probable candidate would be most welcomed A. |

Re: Allied loss at Rimini (1944)
Hello,
One Beaufighter crashed on unknown location on armed recce from Foggia to North Adriatic, TFX NV789 'B', but I believe it ended in the sea. But You may be interested in 600 Sqn's activity: Beaufighter Mk VIF ND162 (6-E) Rees s/d Ju 87 near river Tiber 13/14.5.44 and Ju 87 near Rimini 4/5.9.44. ND172 (6-B) 3/4.9.44 s/d one and shared another Ju 87 Stuka near Rimini. Zoran |

Re: Allied loss at Rimini (1944)
Good morning Zoran.
There are several 414thNF and 416thNF machines missing that could also be taken in account. I believe I will have to dig much deeper to find out... https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase...atekey&page=20 A friend of mine will have a look at his "Mediterranean Air War - volume 5" for me. I will try to find the ORB of the Beaufighter Squadrons meanwhile....According to the terrain (slightly mountaineous) and weather, it looks like Autumn of 1944...possibly a loss related to the Battle of Rimini, circa mid September 1944 (not sure though, just a guess). Photo clearly shows a left wing (seeing from the front) or right wing (sitting in cockpit) with 3-4 machine guns and a filter, which points or suggest the wing of a Bristol Beaufighter. Engine clearly a radial with thin propellers (again pointing to a Beaufighter). Not much left of the fuselage...just part of the tail. Airplane burned a lot. A. |

Re: Allied loss at Rimini (1944)
Zoran,
Can you re-confirm the Beaufighter lost on the armed recce please? NV789 is a Tempest serial. Andy |

Re: Allied loss at Rimini (1944)
OK. This loss was actually NV442, which appears correctly as "B" in the ORB for the previous month. I have no idea where the ORB compiler got NV789 from!
