Seeking details of two American Fighter Pilots
Hi,
Am seeking details of two American Pilots that flew in fighters during 1942. First is P/O. D, D, Gudmundsen. Don't know why he is recorded as a P/O and not a US rank ? Second pilot is Lt.Breelie. Both are known to have flown Spitfires with an RAF Squadron in August 1942. Thanks Alex Last edited by Alex Smart; 30th April 2023 at 04:06. |

Re: Seeking details of two American Fighter Pilots
It helps once we get spelling correct.
Richard "Dick" Gudmundsen https://www.newspapers.com/article/t...ter/123772581/ https://www.newspapers.com/article/t...ews/123772842/ https://www.newspapers.com/article/s...ess/123772954/ Burial: https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/fi...-d-gudmundsen/ Last edited by RSwank; 30th April 2023 at 14:41. |

Re: Seeking details of two American Fighter Pilots
Thank you Col,
That must be the Gudmundsen , however the 133 Sqn ORB gives P/O. D, D, Gudmundsen, MX-K, no serial number. Suggesting that he was from the 307th FS, 31st FG, on attachment to 133 Sqdn, RAF. (MD was 133 Sqdn code ). But as known ORB's are sometimes full of errors. OR Perhaps the British(?) typist got it wrong but other aircraft also just have the MX code given in place of serial numbers and their Pilots are noted as USAAC pilot as opposed to just a name. Thank you too Rolland for those newspaper articles which show the correct details re the spelling of his name. Thank you both, Wish I could find things as quickly as both of you always do , Alex Last edited by Alex Smart; 30th April 2023 at 04:56. |

Re: Seeking details of two American Fighter Pilots
I wonder if "Breelie" could possible be Richard G Braley?

Re: Seeking details of two American Fighter Pilots
Looks like Braley would fit but as before could it have been that Breelie was a typo error ? If it was Braley then he was with the Squadron early enough to have flown Spitfires before moving on to P47's and eventually P-51's.
Thanks Rolland for those wonderful newspaper articles. Akex |

Re: Seeking details of two American Fighter Pilots
Good to see my Dieppe aircrew list is still out there!
I have no record of a pilot name Breelie or Braley flying on the 19th August, so he either wasn't operational on that date or his Sqn didn't take part in the operation. Regarding Richard D. Gudmundsen, he flew two sorties during the day, flying on the Sqn's second and fourth missions, claiming one damaged Do217 during the former. Regards, Steve |
