Interesting article, Byron.

Notice that he's in Heer uniform in the photo. But he was definitely a Luftwaffe officer by summer 1944. I would imagine his records are at Freiburg.

Hi Larry,

Yes, he was an officer of the Lw, put in command of Festungs Ifanterie Btl. 1010 on the islands Paros and Naxos in Heer uniform.
The story realy impressed me.

Now that's really interesting! August 1944 is when the Luftwaffe began transferring masses of personnel to the Fallschirmjäger, Heer and Waffen-SS. So the good Graf must have been one of them and exchanged his Luftwaffe uniform for a Heer uniform. The transfer on paper happen at the stroke of a pen, but I didn't really know about the uniform part, meaning whether they changed uniforms over-night, too. There was probably an adequate supply of uniforms in the Heeres-Bekleidungslagern in Greece to make this possible.
