Ju88 4D+IP 6./KG30 crashed Sweden 28 August 1942
Hi guys
Help needed again, please Ju88 4D+IP of 6./KG30 was apparently abandoned by crew before it crash-landed in Sweden. One of the crew was named as Georg Schutz, and all crew trekked to Finland. I can't seem to find further information. Had the aircraft become lost or had it been damaged in combat? Identity of crew? Any account of their journey to Finland? Cheers Brian |

Hello Brian,
I quote Bo Widfeldt from "The Luftwaffe in Sweden 1939-1945": This Ju 88 (coded 4D+IP of 6./KG 30) was found abandoned at Jänkisjärvi in northern Sweden. The crew had bailed out and after landing safely made their way to Finland. The aircraft crashed but was not too badly damaged. The wreckage was examined and found to have Junkers Jumo 211 F engines with the werk nummern 4309/5013. It was brought by train to Linköping and, in 1944, was sold as scrap. Footnote 26: According to news from Finland on September 3, 1942, the crew arrived safely in that country. Regards Leo |

An interesting aircraft.
The crew was well and truly lost. Most likely it was the same aircraft which was reported flying in a westerly direction as far south as Boden just before midnight. The aircraft must then have changed direction and probably going into Finnish airspace before again going west towards the Swedish border. The place of the crash is only some 22km from the border river. Would be very interesting to find out where the crew actually bailed out. My bet is they did so over Finland. Crossing the river is nothing you do by swimming, and the bridges were probably a bit fewer back then and well guarded. Also a stolen vessel would have been reported and noted down on the Swedish side. The name Georg Schütz comes from a briefcase, with his name on it, found in the wreck which contained a diary and some documents inside. Wonder where that diary is now.... Anyway, I have never seen it established that Schütz actually was the pilot in question. Can this be proven? The remains were kept locked inside the Swedish Aircraft Test Center (Försökscentralen) in Linköping until scrapped. Cheers Stig |

Would the briefcase more likely to have belonged to an Observer rather than a Pilot .

"MAYBE" this crew has had a previous accident as reported at Kracker Archives:
Diermeyer, Heinrich Lt 6/KG-30 Ju 88A-1 "4D + AP" (lost 5/16/40) Bomber Operational Clasp Pilot and crew unhurt on 16 May, 1940, when they made a successful force landing near a farm in Mardal. The cause may have been due to combat with Skuas of No. 803 Sq.. The crew stuffed the ac with hay, and set it on fire. Remaining crew: Gefr Georg Schutz, Uffz Anton Schlösser and Ogefr Heinrich Koch. The crew were picked up by a German seaplane (Flyvrak Norway). A. |

On the 28-8-42 6/KG30 also lost the crew of Hpt. Willi Flechner missing and Ofw Peter Stahl's crew who baled out behind enemy lines but made it home . Is there any mention of the crew's names of 4D+IP in the second vol. of Peter Stahl's book 'Kampfflieger Zwischen Eismeer und Sahara' which followed 'The Diving Eagle' .
