Halifax lost by No.161 Squadron on 5th of August, 1944
Hello
I would like a confirmation of the serial number from a Halifax Mk V from No.161 Squadron that had crashed in France at Glannes (Marne) during the night between the 4th and 5th of August,1944. A document in AIR 27/1068/23 established in March 1945, states that a mistake was done while reporting Halifax number. Instead of LL248, this document indicates it was the LL249. Does anybody got some information about? Two Free French and six British aircrew were killed at the same time. Thank's a lot for your help. Best regards Franck |

Re: Halifax lost by No.161 Squadron on 5th of August, 1944
Thank you for the reference. It is odd
The Air Britain book RAF Aircraft LA100-LZ999 shows LL249 passed from 161 Sqn to 138 Squadron then 1659 Conversion Unit and finally 148 Squadron That was more than enough changes of hands for someone to notice the aircraft they have is not really LL249 I have the 138 ORB but it does not list serial numbers. In the book Trusty to the End - The History of 148 (SD) Squadron 1918 to 1945 by Oliver Clutton-Brock LL249 does appear in the sortie listings Therefore I believe the aircraft did indeed get to the Med and was struck off 01.05.45 as in Air Britain Martin Last edited by MW Giles; 17th January 2020 at 21:09. |
