Welter's Me 262 A-1a
According to Gebhard Aders, K. Welter was given (by whom?) a FuG 218-equipped Me 262 A-1a WNr. 130 056 - probably in mid-October 1944.
AFAIK there never was such a Werknummer. Can anyone help? Thanks Chris |

Re: Welter's Me 262 A-1a
Hi Chris,
firstly, the jet was Me262 V2 Werke Nummer 170056 - often photographed with the radar aerial installation. Secondly, IMHO it is worth verifying what Gebhard Aders wrote in the 1970s - what is the evidence that Welter "was given" this aircraft, or that he flew any Me262 in October 1944? The only documentary evidence I have seen is that Welter flew (probably) Werke Nummer 170095 KD+EA at Rechlin-Lärz, starting in November 1944. This Me262 began to be fitted with night-flying instruments/equipment at the end of October 1944 ("Einbau v. Zusatzbeleuchtung für Nachtflug u. Stellungsanseige für Landeklappen"). In the second half of November 1944, Welter made a night-time flight (his first night flight in the Me262?) in preparation for operational flying ("Nachtflug als Einsatzvorbereitung (Oblt. Welter) wurde durchgeführt. Flugzeug ist nachteinsatz-klar.”). 170095 was not fitted with radar. (Source: BArch RL 36/86) Cheers Rod Last edited by RodM; 8th June 2017 at 11:51. |

Re: Welter's Me 262 A-1a
Hi Chris,
this memo is well-known and does not constitute evidence per see. Welter wrote this memo after the war to give to the British Air Ministry team who interrogated him in Schleswig-Holstein. Welter appears to have made a number of statements to impress his captors, and there is no other evidence to support his statement in the memo that he flew the Me262 at Rechlin-Lärz from the middle of September 1944 onwards. Contemporary documentary evidence still has him flying piston-engined fighters with 10./JG300 at this time, and the weekly Rechlin-Lärz reports contained in BArch RL 36/86 make no mention of any night-time testing of the Me262 or Welter flying the Me262 in September 1944. I would love to be proven wrong, but have yet to see evidence other than Welter's post-war memo. Cheers Rod |
