Re: 17/5/41 Bf110s and Ju52s on Greek airfields
Andreas
You are aware that you give the loss for Bf 110 WNr 3461 as II./ZG 26 while everyone else says II./ZG 76? If majority rules ( ) you are found to have had finger trouble that day.... Cheers Stig |

Re: 17/5/41 Bf110s and Ju52s on Greek airfields
Hello Byron,
Thank you for your information but I am not sure what the abbreviations stand for. Could you explain? Are the other airfields you mentioned near Athens and on the mainland? Do you know if there was an airfield on Salamis? The pilots involved tried to determine where these 52's were attempting to land and our best guess was that it was on Salamis. I believe it was a Ju-52 unit as all the aircraft lined up beside the runway were Ju-52s I appreciate your help. Cordially, Art Fiedler |

Re: 17/5/41 Bf110s and Ju52s on Greek airfields
Hi.
One of my team members must have had a bad day, but thanks for the hint, and the loss record is updated after being checked against the original document. Sadly we have a backlog with regards to double checking all entries of about 7430 records, but we still have a far better record than the GenQu with regards to errors made in the reports Regards, Andreas B |

Re: 17/5/41 Bf110s and Ju52s on Greek airfields
Art.
Fp.Nr. is short for Feldpostnummer, equivalent to a MPO number as I am sure you know. Fl.H.Kdtr is short for Fliegerhorstkommandantur, the command of a military airfield. The (E) says something about the status of the field with regards to how well equipped it is for instrument landing, what kind of surface etc etc, while the other numbers and codes are for ordering and organisational issues. Hope this clear things up a little bit Regards, Andreas B |

Thanks to Andreas, you have the abbreviations now. There wasn`t any airport on Salamis, that is sure. The other fields I mentioned are very close to Athens, within a radius of 20 Km. Re: 17/5/41 Bf110s and Ju52s on Greek airfields
Byron and Andreas,
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. I really appreciate it. I guess that since I do not know the actual locations of these fields/towns, I will ask my granddaughter in Athens if she can pinpoint the towns for me. Of course I am puzzled as I mentioned in my story, we flew at sea level to Kalamaki and strafed losing one pilot. At our reunions we attempted to locate the field that the Germans were using. By virtue of the headings and distance, we concluded the field was on Salamis. So now we are back to the beginning...with no field on Salamis we are confused as to how we flew in an east to south-east heading for a couple minutes and arrived at Kalamaki?? Do either of you gentlemen know of a reference that would pinpoint fields west of Athens? Again I thank you for your excellent assistance. Byron, your English is great and completely understandable. I wish I had paid more attention when I was taking German in school! Cordially, Art Fiedler |

Re: 17/5/41 Bf110s and Ju52s on Greek airfields
Hello Art,
You can see on the attached map of Attica the airfields I mentioned. Begining from the left and just behind the island of Salamis (all marked with a red arrow) is "Megara" with his Aerodrom. Then and going to the right you see "Eleusis" (or Elefsis, or Elefsina). Then you see "Skaramangas" (landingplace for seaplanes), the same after Skaramangas "P.Phaliron". Going north you will find "Tatoi" (or Dekelia) and norther "Tanagra". hope it helps Last edited by byron-; 22nd December 2008 at 23:10. |
