Smile Dortmund-Ems canal

Hi to all,

In the French edition of "Le Grand Cirque" ("The Big Show" in English) by Pierre Clostermann, there is a photograph showing the Hawker Tempest V, NV994, coded JF-E, flying over the Dortmund-Ems canal. In the background of this picture, one can see a town.
Does anyone know this little (?) town ?

All the best,
Jicéhem

Re: Dortmund-Ems canal

I haven't read the book, but I have lived for many years near that canal. Could you post that picture, perhaps I can identify the town.
Best wishes
Robert

I think this is the photograph he is referring to, although on the Web it is poor quality.

Re: Dortmund-Ems canal

Hello all,
Thank you for that photo, Tony.
I strongly believe, that the photo shows the small city Recke, about 20 km NW of Rheine or 20 km NE of Osnabrück. The position of the church, that can be seen on the photo would fit perfectly, also the roads and the size of the city.
However, then it would not be the Dortmund-Ems-Kanal but the Mittelland-Kanal which flows into the "D-E-K" about half the way between Recke and Rheine.
And there is barely another city in that area, that is so close to a canal as Recke.
Hope this helps
Robert

Re: Dortmund-Ems canal

Hello all,

Thanks to your inormation and Google Earth I found that little town on the Dotmund-Ems Kanal. This is Riesenbeck that matches exactly the town on the photo of Hawker Tempest V JF°E.

Cheers,

Jicéhem
