Marseille (158) -“Stern von Libyen” LOL!!!
I always thought, Marseille was annointed the “Star of Afrika” following his death. However, it turns out, Marseille was -how shall we put it- not shy about promoting his own legend. Catching this video on Youtube, you find Galland (103) as Generel der Jagdflieger visiting Marseille’s tent on which is inscribed in billboard sized letters, “Stern von Libyen”!!! Some interesting footage of Ubben (110), Muncheberg (135) & Bar (221) as well.

Rob,
I suppose you're assuming that Marseille put the sign up himself! While I've never heard that Marseille was particularly humble, the sign was most likely put there for the benefit of the propaganda film. Tom |

Re: Marseille (158) -“Stern von Libyen” LOL!!!
Tom,
Don’t get me wrong I have a tremendous respect for Marseille, but I don’t think he was that humble: 1) Many fighter pilots -especially the top aces have large egos –and once Marseille became famous, he was known to favor the company of movie stars. 2) He was removed from JG52 by Steinhoff, in part for insubordination (he was a party boy who sometimes was too tired to particpate in missions –that requires a certain degree of self centeredness -not being flight ready to fight side by side with your comrades). 3) After visiting with Werner Schroer (114 Victories in only 197 Sorties), in a practical joke, Marseille decided to knock over Schroer’s tent with his Kubelwagon, with Schroer still inside! 4) In this very visit of Galland that was filmed, Galland later asked where he the ‘facilities’ were. Marseille unceremoniously gave him a shovel and told the Gerneral der Jagdflieger to pace of distance and dig a latrine. When Galland awoke the next day he was greeted by a sign which said something like, ‘On this spot Adolf Galland General der Jagdfliegers, met nature’s call!” LMFAO! 5) It’s not out of the question that the Propogand Kompanie (PK) asked to have the sign put, up, but he could have REFUSED TO PARTICIPATE in such a stunt if it did not suit his temperment. I’ve seen a decent amount of Wochenschau Newsreels, and I don’t think I’ve seen any sign quite like that –I mean can you imagine that thing out in the middle of NOWHERE! Rob |
