Lieut. Barnett Thomas Talbott USN Parachute April 6, 1928

April 6, 1928
St. Louis Post-Dispatch from St. Louis, Missouri · Page 1

WASHINGTON, April 6. Lieut. Barnett T. Talbott, naval aviator, made a parachute jump from a flaming plane over the Anacostia Naval Air Station here today and was taken to the naval hospital suffering from, severe burns. Bis plane crashed and was burned. With flames leaping into his face from the motor of his plane, Talbott jumped from a height of 2000 feet. -The plane crashed to earth at the southeast corner of the field. It was equipped with a sprinkler but it could not be determined whether Talbott was able to use it. Watchers on the ground saw-flames shoot out from the engine and saw Lieut. Talbott stay with the ship until the fire spread into the cockpit. Then he jumped. A moment later the plane dived to earth, leaving a trail of fire and smoke.

he was later a Lieut Commander on USS Saratoga Sept 1943

Please can anyone supply the type and serial of the aircraft involved. this could be listed as 280406 F6C-5 6998 DC

Which would make it a Curtiss Hawk, but A6998 was a Vought UO-1

He was Born 11 July 1896 and died in New York in June 1973

Many Thanks

Paul

Thanks George

As always, you're a Goldmine of information
So they were mostly attached to bases rather than units. Interesting.

The USMC unit is interesting and when I tried to look it up, it shows I know far too little about their organization during the 1920s...

Cheers

Bourne East Coast Expeditionary Force, Quantico

According to Marine Muster Rolls on Family Search he was with VJ Squadron 6M

six F6C3's went to VJ-6M ("J" for utility),

A7150 was F6C3
