Carl Degelow WW1 Ace - Luftwaffe service?

Hi All,

I'm trying to find out if Carl Degelow, 30-victory ace with Jasta 40 in WW1, served (in any capacity) in an operational unit in the Luftwaffe. All I know is that he did serve in the Luftwaffe, with rank of Major.

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

I am also interest as well I try to complete files with German WW1 aces who also flew as pilot in WW2. Well known is the Hans von Hippel, who flew as fighter pilot in WW1 and have few air claims and in WW2 flew on controls of Ju52. I know that this is not modeling site but maybe somebody would like model of his Albatros fighter:

Hi Srecko,

well, I do have an ulterior motive that you (and everyone else) should be aware of. Degelow and Rudolph Windisch (of Jasta 66) both used the white stag emblem on their Fokker DVII aircraft - this appearing in almost exactly the same form on some Ju 52s in the Crete campaign and persisting for some time afterwards. They are associated with KGrzbV 106 but this may not be a simple solution. The origin of the WW1 use was in honour of the sanatorium in Dresden at Bad Weisser Hirsch (White Hart Spa in English) where both the aces had spent some time recuperating from wounds. It would help to know why this emblem was picked up again in WW2 and the Degelow line of enquiry was one possibility.

He was a reservist and so apparently not too active.

Looks like he used his reputation to do good instead of rising in rank.

According to the aforementioned biography p. 189/190 he made an effort to help Pour le Merite recipient Gotthard Sachsenberg, an unnamed Jewish WW1 pilot, and finally Jewish WW1 pilot Willi Rosenstein. Goering (or his staff) put a stop to this from that point onward.

Reservist when called up in 1939, service on staffs of Udet, Goering and Milch

No further detail, but it looks like the old eagles took care of one another, even if not always spectacular.

thanks for digging out the Degelow information. It looks like a dead-end with that respect - it would have been nice if he had turned up with KGrzbV 106, KGzbV 172 or something. Perhaps another unit member had experience of the Bad Weisser Hirsch or there was Dresden link to a unit.
