RAF Fabric Roundel - Hurricane?

Hey guys!

This was collected in Germany early in the war (was told during Dunkirk).

A mixture of grey and green camo...with a fabric seam down the middle.

The tail color is supposedly from the same aircraft.

Seems more like Spitfire to me...

Thoughts?

TIA

Mike

Re: RAF Fabric Roundel - Hurricane?

The RAF C1 roundel wasn't used until July 1942. So it cannot be during Dunkirk.

Re: RAF Fabric Roundel - Hurricane?

Also the camouflage wasn't ordered changed to Dark Green / Ocean Grey until Aug. 1941....

Re: RAF Fabric Roundel - Hurricane?

Fabric covering, 1942 or later roundels, grey/green camouflage that only leaves one a/c, the Hurricane.

Not a trainer type as they would generally be brown/green

Possibly a liaison type from a fighter type unit resprayed with same paint as squadron a/c. But again almost all the ones I have come across are brown/green.

Very outside chance a jamming Defiant of 515 Sqn, but I cannot find one lost over the Continent. Or an ASR Defiant.

Would wager a large amount on it being a Hurricane

Re: RAF Fabric Roundel - Hurricane?

Thanks guys...

So, most likely a later (post 1942) Hurricane...given the roundel style and camo pattern...

Re: RAF Fabric Roundel - Hurricane?

Those markings came into use from May 1942, I also think they were from a Hurricane or other type but not a Spitfire.
The Dunkirk reference, maybe the aircraft was found in the Dunkirk area and that's where the markings were cut from the wreckage.. Then taken back to Germany .

Re: RAF Fabric Roundel - Hurricane?

The grey may have faded but looks very pale.
Also, would anyone with Hurricane knowledge confirm what that stencilling to the lower left of the roundel (on a Hurricane?) might have said? Was that ‘Hurricane’ stencilling in that position?
“???NG
???NGS”

Re: RAF Fabric Roundel - Hurricane?

Thanks Ian, I would just like to add that we do not know if it is Port or starboard side of fuselage ?

Re: RAF Fabric Roundel - Hurricane?

Alex. If the fin marking is the right way up (which it seems to be) it's the left side, the red was marked forward; a very few were reversed by mistake. I don't think there was a joint in the fabric on Hurricanes along the roundel unless it was a repair.
I've never seen those stencils either, they would not usually be so clear as the camouflage faded. The Hurricane's tail controls could be locked from the cockpit but there was no indication by lettering as here.
Just my 10 cents.

Regards
Nick

Re: RAF Fabric Roundel - Hurricane?

Regarding the "NG" "NGS" I think they said

SLING
LESS WINGS

as is shown on this link for a Mosquito: https://www.cybermodeler.com/aircraf...ssie_003.shtml

Zoom in on the photo in the link (use CTRL with the "+" sign several times) and look at the area under the roundel and also at the tail.
Lettering may be rotated 90 degrees.

Note also the tail where the "EXTERNAL CONTROL LOCKING" stencils are also visible.

Now this begs the question, could the fabric be from a Mosquito? Even though the Mosquito was made of wood there was a fabric covering glued or doped on the outside (maybe in only some areas, I would need to check that).

Another site showing the same plane (UP-J) markings: https://www.modelarovo.cz/de-havilla...ii-walkaround/

(Look at and enlarge the fuselage photos)
