Luftwaffe v USCGC's
There were two Luftwaffe attacks I know of on US Coast Guard cutters proper (not counting attacks on USN vessels manned by the Coast Guard). In operations off eastern Greenland USCGC Northland fired on a 'Junkers' July 10 1943, and USCGC North Star traded fire with another recon a/c north of Jan Mayen Island, claiming to damage and possibly down it, July 23 1943. Obscure incidents to be sure, but by any chance can someone give German accounts, or if not what unit(s) were likely to have been involved?

Re: Luftwaffe v USCGC's
This site says Fw 200 F8+GH of 1/KG 40 was fired on by Northland August 24 1943, near Shannon Island, east coast of Greenland, so apparently a third incident, but it doesn't mention the other two:

Re: Luftwaffe v USCGC's
Thought I'd revisit this old question, having come across a little more info by reviewing the War Diaries of the Coast Guard cutters involved.
1) USCGC North Star, engaged an a/c identified as 'Blohm & Voss Ha 138' so a Bv 138 presumably, at 72-30N, 8-45W (north of Jan Mayen) July 23, 1943. The cutter claimed the a/c was hit and smoking when last seen. Could the unit be Seeaufklärungsgruppe 125, which I've read on web sources served in this area with Bv 138 among other types? 2) USCGC Northland, an encounter with a 'Junkers' is given in the ship's War Diary as July 15, 1943: 13 rounds 3"/50, 300 rounds 20mm fired, no results claimed. 3) as I mentioned years ago, the site http://www.warcovers.dk/greenland/flight.htm says FW 200 F8+GH of 1/KG 40 was fired on by Northland August 20 or 24?, 1943, though the incident isn't mentioned in Willoughby's "US Coast Guard in WWII" which the other two are. It might correspond to the entry in Northland's War Diary for Aug 22 except that a/c, sighted south of Cape David Grey, was thought to be twin engine and did not come within range of the ship's guns. Any other info or suggested sources to fill out the German side of these incidents? Joe |

Re: Luftwaffe v USCGC's
Fw 200C-5 F8+NT (WNr 214) was lost by 9./KG 40 over the Atlantic on 24 August. May be a mix up with F8+GH?

Re: Luftwaffe v USCGC's
Küstenfliegergruppe 406 operated the BV 138 in the northern Atlantic; no losses or damage recorded on those dates.
The only Fw 200 unit operating in the same area at this time was 3./KG 40 commanded by Hptm Robert Maly which appears to have used other Staffel ac as 1./KG 40 was or had converted to the He 177. F8+NT was lost in the southern Atlantic off Spain |
