Re: FAA Corsair Squadrons. claims

Johnny Lowders victory on 1.04.1945 was a S/E aircraft on the ground.

Gerry Salmons victory on 6.4.1945 was shared with 3 Hellcats of 1844 (Bill Atkinson, Gammy Godson and ET Wilson)

Ian Stirling shared his victory with Lt PA Clarke.

9.8.1945 JH Bennet was a pilot of 1842.

Re: FAA Corsair Squadrons. claims

I am more than willing to be proved wrong. Many of these suggestions are interpretations of stuff I have read

Re: FAA Corsair Squadrons. claims

.. on 4.1.1945 Rhodes, Burns and Singleton shared one victory, not two.

12.04.45 For some reason I have Millard damaging a Tess and destroying a Judy? I think the Tess must be a ground victory, even as a suicide plane an unarmed transport wasn't going to be a success.

Re: FAA Corsair Squadrons. claims

By the way my sources are the Hanson biography; the ship bio "Send Her Victorious"(bought when I was a child); the British Pacific Fleet war diary, various BPF books, biographies of Atkinson and Sheppard online, the IWM taped interview of Bigg-Withers...Barret Tillmans history of the Hellcat and Corsair, David Browns Seafire history, in fact anything I could find on the BPF over the last twenty-something years...this sounds much sadder than it should. In truth I despair of the lack of precise information on this exotic and successful formation.

Keith

Re: FAA Corsair Squadrons. claims

...Barlow and Dick share the victory on 4 May 1945? Reducing 1834 squadrons tally to 12 1/2.

Overall I believe that 1834/1836 (Victorious) and 1839/1844 (Indomitable) claim around 60 victories in the BPF 1944-45...1830/1833 (Illustrious) add another fifteen or so and 1841/1842(Formidable) make three, and that the Hellcats claim slightly more but refute the claims for supremacy in this theatre given by many sources.

Just a thought

Keith...

Re: FAA Corsair Squadrons. Operation Crimson claims

My information states that four were confirmed destroyed and two damaged. My sources indicate that the there were six claims so maybe its right?

Re: FAA Corsair Squadrons. claims

Hi Gentlemen,

1- Col, thanks, I do have full names.

2- Keith, great response, much appreciated, it looks like we have both been a
pair of sad wotsits as I have pretty well done the same as you since the 1960's and with the same published sources you mention starting with a listing of FAA Far Eastern claims in "The Cassidy Bulletin" which Chris Shores used to Edit way back then.
I will amend my my records accordingly and continue what is I suppose a labour of love in researching this subject.

Have you seen the book by David Hobbs " The British pacific Fleet"? is it worth the outlay. I guess John Winton's "The Forgotten Fleet" is still the best so far.

Thanks again for your input

Re: FAA Corsair Squadrons. claims

I haven't read Hobbs book, but would be glad to when/if it reduces in price. 30 quid is a bit pricey for a ppbk. Its not even in the National Library of Scotland collection. I agree that John Winton is one of the greats. His fiction work "Aircraft Carrier" us the best I have read on carrier pilots in WW2.

best regards

Keith
