Karl Anton Fritz Popp JU88 Pilot (Photo's)
Hi I am searching for information about my fathers Luftwaffe record.
I have upload all the photos I inherited from him and would appreciate any information personal, geographically or technical about them. What are the various ranks shown by his uniform? any info would be much appreciated. Can anyone recognize the airplane type in photo 73? The captions on the photos are my fathers own, but they were done many years after the war and may not be precise. My father Karl Anton Fritz Popp born 1916 died 1978? in Australia. Born 26 June 1916 Joined Luftwaffe 1935 - 1939 ? JU-88 Pilot. Captured 1945 by Americans handed over to French 12 months incarceration. From these photo's Malvin Brown from the Aircrew remembrance society believes Karl Popp was part of KG77, and that photo 40. overturned aircraft was at Rennes in France Photo Link https://picasaweb.google.com/GregorPopp1/KP_WW2_Stuff# Thank You Gregor Popp |

I did notice that none of the pictures shows your father wearing a Luftwaffe pilots badge. Kind of odd if a pilot.

Re: Karl Anton Fritz Popp JU88 Pilot (Photo's)
Hi Gregor,
Great photos. My thoughts are below, hope they are of some use. Photo 15: Aircraft flying is a Ju88. Photo 27: Dornier 17Z is coded 3Z and belonged to KG77. In mid-July 1940 all three gruppen returned to Germany to convert to the Junkers Ju 88, with III./KG 77 returning to France in late August. Photo 28: Entry hatch into a Ju88. Ladder is folded into hatch. Photo 31: Balloon cable impact on Ju88, port leading edge, close to dive brake. A/C may have black undersides indicating flying over Britain by night. Ju88 in photo #40, which is inverted, may also have this finish, probably taken between Sept 40 - May 41 at a guess. Photo 73: is definetly a Messerschmitt Bf110 C or D and was taken from the pilots seat looking aft. I think the man is holding an MG15 machine gun. Cheers Phil |

Re: Karl Anton Fritz Popp JU88 Pilot (Photo's)
Hi Revi16
Ok your the first person to tell me about a pilots badge what does one look like. I only know he was a pilot from what he told me of course I understand that he may have been expanding the truth. I have since secured two medicals from WASt the secound clearly states not fit for flying duties that was 1938. I was wondering as the war ramped up and they became more needy of pilots that he may have been accepted then. |

Here are the Luftwaffe badges, links on left.
http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/war_.../luftwaffe.htm In picture 2a the sleeve insignia is for Luftwaffe Aircraft Technical Personnel. Perhaps he started as a mechanic and then became part of the aircrew? Gunner, Radio Operator, etc.(each would have its own insignia). |
